Hi Mark,

Yes confirmed, no rexine trim on the handle.

I should really have put a picture of these ‘Rubber PP3 Caps’ up so here you are, oh and these are fitted to another one of my Hunters which also had the feet missing, serial number: 44409.

Paul.

It's a brilliant idea - a good use for something that would otherwise end up in landfill. I did apply some good quality self-adhesive feet to one of mine, but they slip and slide all over the place. A strong glue - or less "grippy" feet - is clearly required for such a heavy set.

Thanks for confirming the handle detail

To your newer set, this is an interesting one because it is close to a "change boundary" and should help us to narrow that down more precisely. So, it should definitely have the following:

- Mesh grille with separate Hacker badge.
- Teak sides.
- Same handle as the older one.
- Gold (unpainted) Elac loudspeaker.
- Silver tone control knobs and black/silver buttons (same as your older set)
- DC input socket

But, depending on which side of the boundary it falls, we have the following variables:

- Hacker badge: chromed brass, or pressed aluminium.
- Scale print: White and green, or just white.

So if you could confirm all these details, that would be extremely useful

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Hi Richard,

Welcome to the forum! Many thanks for your details, which have been added to my records. Your set fits in perfectly with expectations - sitting in the middle of the groupings.

All the best,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Another newby here. Please find below details of my Hacker Hunter RP38A. My parents gave me this radio as a 21st birthday present back in 1971, so I know that it is completely original apart the aerial, which I replaced about 30 years ago. I thought it was beyond repair last year when it started to make a horrible noise. Being non-technical myself, I tried a few local TV/radio repairers, but they couldn't help. Anyway, the other day it suddenly dawned on me that the old, cheepo transformer I had been using might be the cause of the problem, so I splashed out on a couple of PP9 batteries and "bob's yer uncle" it sounds as good as new. I may just stick with batteries or pop into my nearest Maplins to see what kind of transformer they can offer. Anyway, here are the details:

Serial no. 50224
Speaker 58HF/146 goldish

All other details as per Richard's post #183 above.

By the way, I remember that my Hunter cost my parents £40 back in 1971. That would have bought around 300 pints of beer back in those days, so either my Hacker was very expensive or beer was very cheap then - or maybe both!!

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Stuart

Hi Steve,

Thanks for those details. Comparing it with my existing details, your set is correct in every detail apart from the badge - in theory it should have a brass badge...

However, there is only one set that is (considerably) later than your with the aluminium badge (44258), so it's possible that this other set is the incorrect one. I'll add your details to the "misfits" list, and if any similar ones appear, then it might add weight to the argument that yours is right and the other one is wrong.

Thanks once again,

Mark

Hi again Mark,

Correction to my post #185 above. My Hunter (50224) has a one piece aluminum handle, not a three piece as referred to in Richard's post #183. Apologies for the oversight. Otherwise all other details are the same as his.

Hi Stuart,

Welcome to the forum, and apologies for the delayed response

Looking at the differences between your set and Richard's, the differences should be the handle - as you've identified - and the Royal Warrant. Your set is slightly too early to have one. The first Warrant appears to have been granted in 1973.

Could you confirm whether your set has a Royal Warrant? I'm guessing not...

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Hi Mark,

You are quite right, my Hunter does not have a Royal Warrant. Also, it is called a Hunter VHF, so again not quite like Richard's. I should have taken a bit more time when completing my original registration, but I was so surprised that there were so many Hunter enthusiasts that I got carried away in my haste to register mine! Anyway, I hope that the information you have is now all correct.

Best regards,
Stuart

Hallo Mark,

Not sure if you are still collecting info - but here's mine, recently acquired.

Hacker Hunter RP38A, fm-am with Royal Warrant.
Serial number 56815, label on turntable and stamped inside case.
Gold Elac speaker.
Silver bass/treble knobs.
Single piece handle (no trim and assume you don't count round retaining covers.
Scale print all white.
Grill aluminium black finish lines.
Input socket - yes.
Stamped aluminium Hacker badge with black finish, aluminium highlights.

Radio looks completely original. hope that helps.

David.

That "dubious" FANE may be a replacement unit. I don't think Hacker ever sourced from Fane - they could get all the (size, cone, magnet) options they wanted from Elac or Goodmans. It also has a rather small magnet too. Edward

Hi Kirstyd,

Funnily enough, I do have this set on record, only it belonged to someone else? I'm amended the details so that your username is against that set.

Apologies for the delayed response - but I'm catching up as we speak!

Thanks,

Mark
