What you're experiencing is the reason why hifi took off in the late sixties/early seventies and the death knell was sounded for the box record player and the stereogram.

There's a lot of decent hifi gear out there from the seventies and eighties for not much money (sometimes free) so long as you avoid the items with cult followings and prices to match.
