I've wondered for some time how they inserted the mosaic into the envelope.

AFAIK, they rolled it up to get it in. Not easy, even though it was thin and flexible.

Hi Jeffrey,
I suspected that was probably how it was done, but as you say it must have been difficult to avoid damage to the mica and its surfaces. I guess it was inserted through the hole that takes the front optical glass. The "Television comes to London" film shows some of the glass work but not this aspect. Thanks, Peter. |

I believe that EMI kept it a closely guarded secret. I don't know about RCA.
