Here is off screen photo of Cherenkov radiation. The object is a piece of perspex being exposed to high energy 6Mv electrons. The room was in darkness so the light is 90% from the perspex.
You can also see the damage to the camera.

So that's not a star field as the background?

In a previous life I used to work with laser plasma accelerator researchers who, as you might have guessed, were trying to develop particle accelerators based on plasmas. The radiation they produced was quite intense and while the CMOS cameras lasted a reasonable length of time the even more expensive image intensifiers on the front of them came to grief quite quickly. During the time of the first Gulf War the researchers took to referring to the flash-filled images as 'Baghdad'.

Cheers,

GJ

Wonderful responses, everyone. I find it fascinating to connect with stories of people with past or current experience in this field...

My unit had only been exposed to UV so far, as I’m working on mechanical assembly of a circuit outside on a balcony!
