You're right Nick, it's from about 1986. I have two of them, the other from circa 1978. The cable ties were a bit cheaper than buying another lamp

I’m in the process of fitting a new bc lamp holder to an Anglepoise lamp that I got for £20.
There doesn’t seem to be any manufacturers name on it, should a genuine AP lamp be marked etc?

Presumably, everyone knows that it is still possible to buy "proper" light bulbs for your Anglepoise lamps if you know where to look?

I Got my bulbs from StrewFix a year or so ago, I think they called them “industrial”, but when I took a look last week they didn’t seem to stock them any more.

Thats true to an extent, but I had a quick trawl on here before I posted my question and most of the threads on here are years old, and the links etc display " discontinued item". Weights of the bulbs in this thread are the real issue.

A genuine Anglepoise lamp, a 'vintage electrical appliance',(as defined by the thread title) REQUIRES an incandescent filament bulb.
Installing an alternative MAY allow such a vintage device to remain in service until an enthusiast is able to restore it. This is the only benefit of 'upcycling' I have yet identified.

Could you tell me we’re I can purchase an incandescent bulb from, please?However I’m not really bothered what bulb I use, as long as it works and you can always tighten the Nuts and bolts to stop it moving. I’ve just replaced the lamp holder, now looking for microswitch.

There's plenty on Ebay/Amazon still, as well as other online lighting suppliers. The "Rough Service" loophole was closed in 2016, but Google "Traffic Signal" bulb . Also, I was talking to someone at a steam rally who said that some people with old showmans engines are using "Fireglow" bulbs (exempt from ban) after removing the red lacquer with solvent.

Excellent light output, every bit as good as a 60W GLS lamp, just the right weight, except that they don't cook the Anglepoise's wiring and lampholder, they use less electricity and they seem to last forever.

Thank you both, I think I’ll go for the Philips LED, with light output of 806 Lumens it seems ideal, when buying new bulbs I always check the Lumens first not the equivalent wattage.

Incandescent GLS lamps are still available from several suppliers, but availability may be declining.

I would prefer one of the lightweight LED "Filament" bulbs that are now widely sold.

If you are determined to use incandescent lamps, then I advise stocking up. The "rough service" loophole has been closed, the "traffic signal" loophole may be next, as may be the "existing stock" loophole.

I found some 60W and 100W BA22 incandescents NOS in a Leominster antiques emporium today. Acquired one of each for spares for my lamp limiter. There were 1 60W and about a dozen 100W left afterwards. 100W would be OTT for Anglepoise use, though.

In a recently acquired Anglepoise clone (tatty but functional after a quick rewire) I'm using an 11W Philips LED bulb which weighs in fine (and cost as much as the lamp!).

Any rough service NOS remnants you may find should be from a reputable maker (and examined to establish that they LOOK genuine) as rather a lot of cloned rather hazardous rubbish has appeared over the last few years.

Your lamp looks like my genuine anglepoise lamp from the mid eighties, I have an 60w equivalent led bulb in mine six pounds from Tesco no problems and the light output is identical to the 60w incandescent it replaced.

The recently-issued August 2018 Toolstation catalogue lists (on page 158) a range of clear dimmable Quartz-based BC GLS lamps by Corby . 18W (=24W) to 105W (=133W), all priced at under £1. They also do a 60W BC fireglow bulb for £2.04

This was the bulb that was got in the end, its a no-brainer, no need to cut springs or over tighten joints.



It's not too bright, it's the same weight as an incandescent and the real bonus is it doesn't get hot. After being on for hours you can grasp the shade and its barely warm, meaning its kind to the shade and the switch. It said £8 on the box, my missus got it for £3 .

With regards to dating the lamp, I looked through graces guides etc. and I could only see similar but nothing exact. There are specialist websites/sellers that I have found around that I can enlist help from in dating it.
