Hi,
For those interested there is a Marconi mirror lid TV for auction at Batemans this Saturday, 3rd. http://www.batemans-auctions.co.uk/c...earch+for+Lots It will be interesting to see how much this goes for and who buys it. I hope it stays in the country. regards Craig |

If that's £3 to 4K it's cheap!

Re: Marconi 702 for Auction at Batemans
But remember we don't know its condition. It could have been bodged up with a later CRT and heaven knows what which would severely devalue it. Or it could be absolutely near original which is likely if the provenance is correct. If it has genuinely been in one family for its entire life it could turn out to be a nice example.

Re: Marconi 702 for Auction at Batemans
Wow - they are starting to come out of the woodwork! would be nice if someone near to the auction house, to go and take lots of pictures and if they can shove the leads of an AVO 7 over the CRT, EHT etc. Good for them to include the serial number - let's find out what the chassis numbers are. Veneers lifting the first foot of cabinet, so would expect the power chassis to be a bit rusty.
I am down south, so who on here is near Stafford? By the way, as well as that 703 a while back, Bonhams have an HMV 905 in for May. Laurence |

As Graham points out in post #6, before any of you start making travel plans be aware the auction's at Stamford and not Stafford.

Re: Marconi 702 for Auction at Batemans
Sorry everyone for the confusion - my fault with my quick typing. Yes, Stamford is the venue location.
Out of all the mirror-lids made, the 702 really is my favourite. The proportions, design, size, it is the perfect pre war telly (even though the circuits are a bit weird). This will surely go to a nice friendly home. And no, not mine - don't have the room or an understanding missus. Laurence |

Re: Marconi 702 for Auction at Batemans
Have received pictures of the back - cloth rip exposes insides. It's all there. CRT looks to be totaly correct as does the VR wiring throughout. Very untouched. Switch blanked, but the NH4 valve holder isn't! Valve gone though.
How does one put pictures on - or should I PM someone the pictures? cheers Laurence |

Re: Marconi 702 for Auction at Batemans
The 702 sold for £7,200.00 hammer price so, with commision & vat on commission, that comes to nearly £8,600.00 - WOW!
It was bought by someone in the room so hopefully, it will stay in UK. The bidding was strange as the auctioneer jumped from about £4.5K to over £6k in one leap! My commission bid was left way behind . Did anyone on the forum buy it? |

Just a thought: there may have been a flurry of online bids before the auctioneer could catch up.

A mate of mine (far richer than me) bought it and it will definitely stay in the UK. We spent the afternoon poking around inside to see what had been got-at and what the general state of the set was in. There were no even remotely recent repairs, just a few minor bodges which had obviously been performed many many years ago. It looks like there should have been a plate over the EHT transformer (which was missing) and the plate which held all the tuned-circuit covers in place was missing too. Other than that it was all very nice and tidy. It was all very exciting when we removed the plate on the back-left of the control panel to reveal the 240/25 and 405/50 switch. Thanks all. From Mike.

Re: Marconi 702 for Auction at Batemans
Thank goodness it has been purchased by a UK member who will obviously now care for it properly.
When you say you removed the plate to reveal the switch, what exactly do you mean? Was there physically a switch on wires tucked away with the round blanking plate over the lettering, or just the lettering under the dome Now someone is going to have fun with the sticky systoflex !!! It does strange things, especially on the sound chassis... Mike...

Re: Marconi 702 for Auction at Batemans
Sorry Mike, my error - What I meant was just the place where the switch was and the 240 / 405 legends. Still pretty exciting though.

I could/would have gone to £3000 but that would have been in hope rather than expectation.
