Default What is/was an EMI SCOPE?

the other night in our area was the 'recogida'. a bulky rubbish collection night, a bimonthly event where people leave heavy items of furniture out in the street to be collected by the council. Of course, unofficially it's a scavengers paradise and there's usually old tvs, radios etc. to be had!

Amongst my finds were two speakers, which also look like part of a lid of some kind of record player but maybe a projector or reel to reel. Anyone recognise the name 'emi scope'? I will try and get some pictures up soon. regards, Ben

Hi Ben,

I don't see any references to EMI in this site:
http://web.onetel.com/~parfittwar/sale3kk.htm

I don't suppose the EMI could be Eumig?

Wasn't an Emiscope (no space) one of the brands original television cameras? Or the actual tube itself?

Or am I way out with that?

Yes Emiscope is the brand name on the early EMI CRTs but what would link them to loud speakers?

There is a reference to "EMI-scope" as a HiFi company in this Time magazine article from Oct. 8 1965, about halfway down:-

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/ar...842198,00.html

"...and other hi-fi companies began to follow suit. Shure, EMI-Scope, Fisher and others put out "solid-state" (transistorized) portables that looked like luggage when closed, sounded almost like full symphonies when open."

Regards, Mick.

The EMI SCOPE was a service aid instrument brought out in the 1950's. It was a combined oscilloscope and valve voltmeter.I say oscillscope it was really a trace display as you could not make measurements from the screen.

I had one of these years ago

But that wouldn't have needed loudspeakers, would it?

You asked about an Emi Scope , I have told you what it was. What you have picked up could have been an homemade project using an emi scope chassis , who knows.

ok chaps hopefully these images will provide some clues.
I note the 'solid state' on the trim. this plus the 'lid' design to me suggests a stereo record player or tape deck of some kind but who knows.

thanks for all the contributions thus far, BTW.

Surely "EMI Scope" was a trademark of the GEC-Marconi company and was used on various products including crts and hi-fi? I seem to recall that there was an EMI integrated valve amp which incorporated a crt in its front panel and that it was branded "EMI Scope", back in the 1960s.

What is the size of the lid Ben?
Looks like it could have been from an early cassette deck or portable record player to me, but the size would give a good clue.
Looks a bit 70's in design to me.
What does the writing on the right of the lid say?
Mike.

writing says solid state. so looks like late 60s on.
as to size, they're a bit bigger than an LP record sleeve ie. about 12x16 inches. they're rectngular with a sort of gap cut out. they also have latches and a RCA phono input connector on each.

Hmmm, could be a tape deck then at that size, as most of the record players were a lot smaller; normally made to take 45s but also LPs by overlapping the edges.
Tried Googling last night but no joy; perhaps someone will recognise it in the future.
Mike.
