Default Were there some issues today?

Hi Guys,

I thought I'd post this just in case you didn't know... For about 5 mins today I received the attached message. I then got a "site cannot be loaded" message, then hey presto all was well.

All the best,

Trev

I had a load of database connection error emails at 16:41 so something must have happened at that point. I've had that a couple of times before over the last week or so too, though they were both in the early hours of the morning so I assumed they were due to server backups or updates. I'm referring it to the hosting company to look into.

Response from the hosting company:

Quote:
There was a huge influx of requests that sent the server load very high. We blocked the IP address making the requests and it's now stable.
I am continuing to receive the database error emails (as the queue clears) with times 16:41 to 16:43 so it obviously lasted for a few minutes which fits with Trev's report.

Thanks Paul,

Hope it wasn't a DOS attack. It sounds interesting they blocked an IP.

It's all looking as super as it normally does for me now.

A DDOS attach is usually from multiple IP addresses and targets the same URLs repeatedly. This was a single IP address and all the email notices I looked at had different URLs, so probably a website downloading program or script working excessively hard. It was a Germany IP address.

vBulletin released an urgent security patch today which I have now applied here.

http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forum...x-of-vbulletin

They are sensibly not saying much about it yet (to allow forums to be patched first) but it's possible that the issue the other day could have been something targeting the hole that is now patched.
