Default Any info on the Ferguson 3928 (50D studio centre)

Hi All,

Looking for any info regarding the Ferguson 3928 (50D studio centre).

I could do with a service manual ideally but had no look finding anything (I have searched through past threads and other forums prior to posting).

Please note this model is essentially the same as the 3922 (only difference was that the 3922 had a wooden surround I believe)

I have also read that at different stages in it's life different record decks were used in the 3928 (later versions used a BSR deck rather than a Garrard). I can confirm mine has a Garrard belt driven deck.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. This unit has both a record player, cassette recorder & radio - if this post in the wrong place please do let me know!

This was not a bad effort by Thorn to compete with the late 70's Japanese high end music centres.
The Garrard deck was much better than the BSR alternative which was absolute junk. The supplied speakers that used Goodmans drive units stunted the potential too.
I have some spares as I dismantled one in recent years and kept the power amp/power supply board. I did have the service manual at one time but can't remember seeing it recently, I'll have a search...

Thanks Greg!

Yes, I went with it because of the Garrard deck really! I got it from a house clearance, it is a bit of a project for me as it hasn't seen any use in over a decade.

I have got the cassette deck running and playing, a stylus is on the way for record player and I have freed it up so it is all running (planning to repair the auto feature this weekend.

The speakers are rather crackly, will be taking them apart soon too!

Would be good luck if you did have that service manual knocking around!

So all I have found is the section of the circuit diagram that shows the mains transformer with various secondary windings, rectification and regulators, power amp and speaker/headphone wiring. I must have chucked the rest. You're welcome to a copy if helpful? Usually a spray of Deoxit in the pots and switches (especially the play/record changeover sliding switch on the cassette deck PCB), belts and bulbs as required, re lube the turntable spindle bearing and you're away!

Speakers very rarely fail - so don't just assume they are at fault. There may well be a problem in the signal that is being fed to them.

the foam surrounds may have crumbled on the bass drivers

Hi!

I have a copy of the full 3922 & 3928 s.m., but I'll have to dig it out as it's on another h.d.d. somewhere at home – please give me a night or two to find it!

I don't think the budget Goodmans speakers as used on this would have had anything as sophisticated as foam surround bass units!

Indeed, 8 inch foam surround bass and a 3 inch cone tweeter. Simple 2 piece crossover (or rather just a high pass filter) and a thin chipboard cabinet. A nice pair of period Lintons or Ditton 15XRs would be an improvement. Agree though speakers probably not the cause of any crackle, but would have lack of bass and 'chuffing' if foam rotted...

Chris55000 that would be fantastic thank you!

Definitely need a manual to get moving really! I can see so far that a few caps. have leaked, and I need to clean the pots.

already cleaned all the connections for the speakers - wondered if it is worth replacing the wiring as it looks pretty knackered!

Will look at opening the speakers up later!
