Set F Mk 1 Box and Testing Instructions
Hi all,
I have been going thru my father-in-laws estate and came across the box and testing instructions for a Set F Mk 1. I know he served in Darwin, Australia during WW2 as a Flight Mechanic in two of the Spitfire Squadrons. I also know that after the war he specialised in electronics and telecommunications. The box is in very good condition and the instructions are printed on copper sheet. Just wondering whether there is a market for these items and what is a reasonable asking price. Cheers and keep safe, Mick |

I've no idea what people in Oz would pay for it though. It's going to cost quite a bit if you have to send it to Europe or the US.

I love the rudimentary way you are expected to test the ringing current.

Re: Set F Mk 1 Box and Testing Instructions
Though I wouldn't recommend it myself. Even with dry fingers the buzzer in a set "F" can give quite a jolt - as will the magneto unless the handle is turned very slowly. Far better to follow the alternative of connecting the handset receiver across the line terminals.

Ah, but those are field instructions for rough tough squaddies rather than trained signallers.

I've certainly never paid anything remotely approaching that for even a set "F" with box, let alone an empty box. The only thing going for it is that, like yours, it's a Mark I, which is much rarer than a Mark II.

Re: Set F Mk 1 Box and Testing Instructions
Fair point. That thought had gone through my mind, though I'm neither of the above myself.

Re: Set F Mk 1 Box and Testing Instructions
I have the phone, but are missing the box, but I am not willing to pay 800 kroner, I sent a message whit a lower bid when it came, but have not got any response.
For me it is much more fun to get the phones working than having all those details perfect. Mine has no buzzer, only the induction coil, but it is marked MK1 |

Re: Set F Mk 1 Box and Testing Instructions
Easy identification of a Mk I is that it has a metal case with a hinged lid whereas a Mk II has a bakelite case with a removable lid.

Re: Set F Mk 1 Box and Testing Instructions
I very rarely read the Telecoms section of the forum as I am mostly interested in kit using EM waves rather than electrons going down wires. However I am also interested in the military side of things so the title of this thread did catch my eye, despite it missing the initial "Tele" bit! (The item is widely known as "Tele Set F" - or more formally "Field Telephone Set F").
Technical data (if you want that) is commonly available in EMERs - Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Regulations - that the Army produced for virtually every bit of kit they used from pre-WWII through to about 1990. So there is a set of EMERs for the Tele Set F (I don't have them though), which will cover everything from how it works, to very detailed repair and testing procedures, plus modifications that were made to deal with problems in use. I see some of those are available here - item 1606 in particular. I'm afraid actually getting copies from that site can be something of a marathon task - which I will leave those interested to investigate. If you are not a member its probably best to ask someone who is a member to get the document for you. Having sold a Tele Set F myself about a month ago, I can tell you there is definitely a market for them - at least in the UK. Whether that's the same in Australia I can't say - but a check on what's sold on Ebay (do a search and tick the Sold Items box) in recent months will quickly tell you what has sold and how much they have sold for. The fact that the one mentioned in post #2 has not sold for $80, suggests to me that the price is far too high. And all the OP - and the one in post #2 actually have is the box - not the complete Tele Set F!! Looking on Ebay here in the UK, I see a complete one sold for nearly £100 including postage fairly recently. I would say 80% of the value is in the actual telephone instrument - and 20% in the box (you make your own estimate!) - but in that case, that recent sale suggests a more sensible price for the box alone would be around £20 in the UK. And yes, Tele F's do turn up without boxes - I had one - so there will be some market for the empty boxes. Generally the demand is for the re-enactment market - alive in well in the UK (Covid allowing) - no idea how that is in Australia though. Richard |

Re: Set F Mk 1 Box and Testing Instructions
There's one in John Birkett's shop window in Lincoln right now: thirty quid. Bit different to when I bought my first two: one pound-fifty each, in boxes with white pigskin straps from a junk shop on the Grassmarket in Edinburgh back around 1971!

Re: Set F Mk 1 Box and Testing Instructions
My first "F" (Mk II), which I acquired accidentally as part of an auction lot with a telephone 232, cost me about £20 for the lot somewhen around 2006. Shortly afterwards I acquired a second (which turned out to be a Mk I) for £19. The most I've paid for a field telephone was £40 for a telephone set "H" Mk II.
