Quick Reply
I have noticed that recently (not sure exactly when) that Quick Reply no longer applies the reply directly to the thread, but goes through the same intermediate screen that a full reply does. Is this now a permanent change? I must say that I preferred the way it worked before to use before.

Re: Quick Reply
It does go via the intermediate message page now, which adds all of a second or two to the posting time, so insignificant.
It is due to needing to turn off a couple of AJAX features as detailed from post #23 here https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...=108347&page=2 It will need to stay as it is unless/until it is fixed in vBulletin. EDIT: It appears that it will be fixed in the next beta version, but there is no release date for that yet. |

Re: Quick Reply
Quick Reply now gives the intermediate screen as attached then reloads the thread page.
Before the update and changed the post was added onto the thread without the page reloading. |

Re: Quick Reply
It's not the question of any (insigificant) extra time. It's the fact that extra clicks of the "back" button being needed to get back to the list of threads (one of which - when the intermediate page appears - needs to be made quickly before it loops back to the post again, whereas it returned in a single click before.

Re: Quick Reply
You could use the breadcrumb trail links near the top of the page (see attached), single click.
Or keyboard backspace button has the same effect as the browser back button and can be tapped several tines rapidly. Like it or not, it can't be changed until the next software update is released and I'm able to install it. |

Re: Quick Reply
I should add that the reason for the update to this version was for compatibility with PHP 5.5, which is needed for a forthcoming server upgrade. VBulletin 3 is old and the only updates it's getting are for PHP compatibility now (and these don't seem to get much testing). Newer versions are expensive, and a move to different (free) forum software would be a big job - though in the longer term we may have to do that.

Re: Quick Reply
Another tip:
On most browsers, holding down the "back" button for a second or two will drop down a list of visited pages, and you can select the list of threads from there. I haven't used Internet Explorer for a while, but on IE8 at least, you have to click a little triangle just to the right of the back and forward buttons to get the list. Alternatively, pressing Alt plus the left cursor key is the same as clicking "back", which might be quicker/easier for some. Using the "backspace" key usually does the same... When I visit, I tend to browse by using the "New Posts" link, and it's those search results that I like to get back to after making a post. I don't think there is a link to do that on the page, so you do have to go back in history to get there. I agree that the Ajax-enabled Quick Reply was somewhat more convenient, but actually, I've always preferred to click on "Go Advanced" anyway because somehow, proof-reading is easier when I see the preview - no idea why that should be, but for me at least, there is something about seeing it as part of the actual page, and as a result I look more carefully for problems. Does that make sense?? Perhaps that's just me |

Re: Quick Reply
You could click "New Posts" at the top again, and it will be updated based on the posts you have already seen.

Re: Quick Reply
Indeed, but if you'd worked your way through 7 pages of new posts, with 3 still left to go... And I don't read every thread returned by the search - perhaps only a quarter of them, so the new thread search will be nearly as unwieldy
With less busy forums, I often do as you suggest. But sometimes, clicking "back" is easier than scrolling up to the top, especially if you have a mouse with back/forward buttons. |
