Default Tesco now selling Walkmans.

Was in Tesco today and next to the shortband radio I mentioned sometime ago was a good old fashioned cassette Walkman for sale.
Incorporating a Cassette player AM/FM Radio plus headphones and built in mic it was selling for £20.
I've not seen a cassette player for sale for a while now and it seems that Tesco are on the button when it comes to revivals.

For anyone interested its called GrooveE retro personal cassette player and recorder.

I think Argos had one or two tape recorders in their catalogue the last time I looked.

Couldn't resist

My wife bought a Bush branded tape Walkman a couple of years back. It was total junk. Mono playback! I use the AM radio in it for sniffing out oscillations and that’s it.

Apparently Tesco is winding down it's electrical goods sections in the supermarkets.

Asda has some good retro stuff under the Onn or Polaroid brand..I think i have seen Walkmans there.. It sells AM/FM radios starting from about £6 .

However I bought a little 'Onn' Dab radio there for about £20 (varies from week to week)
..absolutely fantastic bit of kit for the money..I was particularly interested in picking up Radio 4 Extra, but about 5 minutes after I had switched on, it virtually had all the major and local stations I wanted on the presets...in the month or so since purchase I cannot say I have noticed any drop out or popcorn.

BTW.. the mini jack out is stereo so a useful source for tape recorders etc.

That silver personal cassette player appeared under another name for a couple of years in the Argos catalogue...possibly is still there with the Bush brand.

From what I hear, it's cheap and not especially cheerful. But the mere fact that two high street retailers are selling such an item proves there's some demand.

I'd happily pay £30 for a reasonable quality stereo "walkman".

The Onn DABs look similar to the Alba DABs Argos sell, & might have the same innards.

I've got 2 (1 stereo & 1 mono) which both perform very well.

***sigh***

If it's not a Sony its not a Walkman. Certainly not with a capital "W" anyway. What this is is a personal stereo, and not a very good one at that. You can't beat the original.

I think Walkman has become a generic term along with Hoover, Biro and Dremel.

I'm awfully glad I kept the Sony I bought circa 1992, around the time Sony stopped using 'dial' tuning & went PLL, LCD, AM/FM, preset stations and reverse play with Dolby for tape playback. Very up-market.

It still retains its original box/instructions/accessories etc, the all important 'Mega bass', and from memory, cost me £89.99 from Argos (no ties) all those years ago. Still works a treat and has an authentic retro 'cool' about it (apparently )

Defo a Walkman, in every sense.

Thoughts of tangled tapes that had to be unwound from around capstan. Broken headphones, Tiny screws..
Battery junk that always ended up on the floor with the customer denying all knowledge of the accident. [It just fell apart in me 'ands.]

I think compact cassettes were definitely an item of retro technology I was glad to see the back of!

A total customer nightmare! John.
