I liked the little hook thing he used to reconnect the counterbalance spring, Much better than fingers and a small screwdriver.

Yes, I have one. It's a dental plaque cleaner. Can buy these for £1.99.

Nothing wrong with a 1963 Defiant record player, it probably sounded better than the Bermuda!

It's called a spring hook.

I have two spring hooks, and very useful for jobs like that they are, too. Firms such as CPC, RS, and maybe Rapid, Maplin and others, stock them

Some spring hooks tools have a traditional hook at one end & an L shaped wire at the other (helps with pushing springs into place).

Also very useful for getting belts into awkward spaces.

RS sell (sold?) a set of 5 different spring hooks (2 sizes of conventional hook, an L-shaped one, a reverse hook and a forked thing for torsion springs) that screw into a supplied handle. Also included are 2 extension bars. I have the set in my tookit and it has been very useful over the years.

Dentist's tools are probably one of the most useful things in my kit. They are particularly useful for cleaning between the tracks on veroboard if you are into home construction. You have to watch for small bits flying off the board though as they are quite springy and can eject them at quite a speed. Maplin do a comprehensive kit of soldering aid tools.

Sorry if it's already been mentioned, but James May does an excellent programme in which a chosen item (usually vintage) is completely dismantled, and then he re-assembles it completely from scratch.

A whole interrupted hour of gentle, fascinating viewing! It's TV at it's best, in my opinion.

Not 100% sure, but I think it could be called The Reassembler, or something similar.

Isn't this programme what this thread was all about

It is, but Lancs Lad's post has probably been moved here from another thread, to avoid two similar threads running in parallel.

Indeed, it was in the repair shop thread. I've reopened this thread if anyone wants to contribute.
