Default Murphy A192.T.

Perhaps the wife is not that bad after all. We had lunch and a few hours in one of the 'Antique stall malls' in a place called Eccleston. one of the stalls has several radios, both transistor and valve pocket through to table top. I think the pending total shutdown coming Thursday has put a few things on knockdown.

Anyway the Murphy looked nice and cute. So the better half bought it for me. This has the Trawler band for short-wave going from over 170 Metres to just under 70 metres. So I may catch some of the a.m. nets on top and 80 metres. It is not getting plugged in yet until I can get it looked over but the case appears in good condition, has cloth covered three core mains cable all valves present etc. Think it will sit for a while before being looked at.

My first Bakelite.

I like these, I have got one of this variant and the one with the standard SW coverage, you dont see many of the Trawler band ones.
Looks in good condition, nice easy sets to work on, you may be able to keep the original mains lead as it is PVC rather than rubber, just need a replacement knob if you can find one.

I go there quite often myself but my wife steers me clear of any stalls with radios. It seemed to survive the first lockdown OK. Let's hope the same is true for this one.

Maybe we should have a forum meet there when "all this" is finally over

Yes it is, keep away from the Pye set under the basket of linen, but if its the very nice looking set on the floor middle back I was tempted, but was still a bit more than I wished to spend, (or the wife) If its the one I am thinking of it was marked at £77. so should be £61.60.

Note all are listed as not tested and one can not really take a screw driver to them to check them out.

The radio has finally got mains applied to it today, smaller caps were replaced, also a transformer rewind thanks to Ed before Christmas.

Started again to look at it on Monday, tested the main smoothing capacitor and found that it had a leakage current of 15 mA at 250 Volts DC, so a replacement cap was ordered.

It arrived and was fitted. A few more checks with the meter and the unit has been powered up. I will leave powered on whilst I am with the radio.

With a long wire it is OK on LW and MW. not sure of T band yet, I think I will need to wait until night-time for signals to start getting over the local interference.

Will have to keep my eyes open for the correct tuning knob for it, but it looks OK to me.
