Scroll down to item 24. Suggestion here that it was used on a 55V-0-55V system. Hence the double pole fusing.

Re: Anyone seen one of these plugs before
They had them in the 1950s-built physics lab at school; don't know what they were fed from but I imagine some sort of big isolating transformer for safety reasons, schoolkids being well known to do silly things.....

Re: Anyone seen one of these plugs before
Amongst the 'non-standard BS1363 plug variants' there were various options of pin orientation and differences between manufacturers. Walsall, Britmac and MK for example are not interchangeable, nor are Britmac SP-fused and DP-fused IIRC. I sometimes encounter the Britmac SP-fused version with normal L & N pins but round E, on special infrastructure supplies in large buildings. It discourages cleaning staff from sneakily unplugging the servers as they know their vacuum cleaner plug won't fit!
You can still find the 'Walsall Gauge' equivalent on the London Underground, which is like regular BS1363 but with all three pins rotated through 90 degrees, used on 55-0-55 supplies. I think these were available in SP and DP-fused versions, not sure if there was any difference to stop them being interchanged. |
