Default Re: What exactly is meant by a 'Transcription' Turntable?

Thanks for all the "Quick Start" info-very helpful, new to me and from people in a position to know. Are there any more thoughts on whether the "mystery" transcription type deck in 1935 Radiograms might be a 201 or is that still unclear? Does anyone else have a platter like the ones Clive owns?

To my [very in-expert] eye, the overall player 'look' doesn't seem to change that much in 15 years, the main difference being the auto change mechanisms. The few single play decks from the 1950's I've seen, don't appear to be that different from the one in Clive's A28.

All though I appreciate the complexity and sophistication of [especially very early] auto change mechanisms-sometimes akin to a watch perhaps?-I was always looking towards single play manual operation in the sixties operation and still tend to latch on to anything that might appear to be more like a Transcription Deck, even from 1935

You're right to point out that the Thorens Reference is belt drive. I was mainly trying to point out that there was a world of difference between Thorens regular consumer, affordable belt driven decks and the Reference monster.

Very true. They also did the Thorens Prestige which, to my eyes, is even nicer!

Rather over the top and a bit of a dog's breakfast. Designed to sell on looks.

I'd rather have a nice TD125.

I wonder what percentage of 'transcription' turntables have ever been used to transcribe anything? and did the copyright protection gang know?
