1979 Sharp GF-8585 resto - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Hi all new here, I’ve recently acquired a 1979 Sharp GF-8585 and I’m in the process of restoring it lightly, mainly cleaning it inside and out and trying to get the tape to work. after some research I found out the Capstan rubber has perished (actually it wasn’t anywhere to be found at all!) and this causes tapes to be chewed due to the drive tyre not making contact with the capstan. my question to you all is this, where on earth can I get new rubbers I’ve scoured eBay, google etc and can’t find a sausage! Any help greatly appreciated, Jordan.

The first thing to try is to clean everything carefully with meths or isopropyl alcohol. If you're lucky that will revive the tyres.

You can buy a bag of different sized generic belts from Chinese eBay sellers for a pound or two, and a few of these are likely to replace any failed belts.

If you actually need to replace any idler tyres then you have your work cut out, as these may be impossible to obtain. You may find a neoprene O-ring can be used as a replacement.

if you mean the rubber drive surface at the base of the capstan i usually use a short piece of silicon tubing. Works welll

Silicon tubing or I have used small fuel pipe for model aircraft engines . The Sharp boomboxes in general have this issue .

You can also buy “rubber roller restorer”, I think Electrolube make it. I find it works well, as long as the material hasn’t gone rock hard or started to liquify.

The roller mounted on the capstan of Sharp decks of this era just turns to a black sticky Goo though. Well past the "restorer" stage.

CPC/Farnell have limited stock of Pinch Wheels, they call them "Pinch Roller" eg AVAS2:

Thanks for the response everyone, a friend of mine used to build petrol powered RC cars so I’m going to ask him for some fuel hose and try that as I’ve looked everywhere and cannot find anything small enough!
