Replacing Waxies in early Transistor Radios-neccesary or not?
What views do other members have on this subject. I'm prompted to ask because, having checked/cleaned a Bush TR 82B, the radio is working perfectly as originally made. My feeling is that, because only low voltages are involved, and the waxies are rated at at least 150v, there should be no problem.

I have found some leaky waxies in a couple of Bush and Roberts transistor sets. I would.

I don't replace these on sight, because the applied DC voltages are so much lower.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it?

I'm with Paul there - any leaks are insignificant at 9 volts or so, and are unlikely to get worse unless they go completely S/C.

Supporting what others have said, I generally find they don't give any trouble and therefore I don't bother changing them.
Tim's comment is worth bearing in mind though; as trouble-free as they tend to be in transistor sets, problems are not completely impossible. |

I have seven of these sets, all worked when powered up, just needed a drop of servisol! I have only replaced capacitors in a hacker sovereign in the last ten years! Caps don't seem to be a problem in transistor sets, AF11X transistors are another matter....... Mark |

I think I'll go along with the majority view, and not replace the waxies(or the red & yellow electrolytics) unless either gives trouble whilst the TR82 is under test.

The one time I can across the red, yellow and black electrolytics they were all very leaky.

Perhaps I WILL replace the electrolytics after all, then, Graham

Might be best just to test them. Easy enough with low voltage ones. The ones I had to change were across the DC heater line of a valve preamp, so probably had a hard life.

Re: Replacing Waxies in early Transistor Radios-neccesary or not?
I'd leave the caps as they are, when a cap is good its resistance is practically infinity, when it goes leaky it actually has a very high resistance in the 10's of thousands of ohms, in valve circuitry at several hundred volts this is bad news, at 9 volts I have never had a problem.
Cheers
