Hi, I couldn't believe the price of solder either, I eventually got a 500g 0.7mm roll of 60/40 from CHS for 21.02 plus vat. I remember not so many years ago this was £7 to £8. If I get any surplus rolls will need to keep them in a safe. Norman

Hi Gents, if this goes much more expensive we shall have to re-cycle the stuff, much as our Cuban forum member does!!

Didn't believe you until I looked for myself

Fortunately I still have a couple of 500g reels. Wish I had bought loads a few years ago!

The current "Screwfix" catalogue lists tin/lead solder at £10.99 for 500g, code 75936, on page 469 of the current (March 2013) catalogue. Constituents not stated, but the stated melting range is 183 - 234 degrees C. I don't think it includes a flux core.

Screwfix web site down at present, but found hi-res photos of the reel end (Fernox) elsewhere. 3mm diameter, and the metal content is not stated, but solidus/liquidus temperature range is consistent with 60 Lead 40 Tin as opposed to the 60 Tin 40 Lead commonly used in electrical work.

Screwfix is not the cheapest, although possibly the most convenient as they have lots of stores and it's a stock item.

The same stuff is available here http://www.ryanairconspares.com/fern...0g-p-7446.html
at £8.45

and here http://www.plumbase.com/tprod94757/s...er-500g-m.html
at £6.56,

both VAT inclusive for a 500g reel.

I stocked up years ago, I am very glad to say.
Both due to the then proposed restrictions on the use of proper solder, and general concerns regarding rising commodity prices.

I also stocked up on cable and flex, purchasing about £200 worth some years ago, A similar stock would cost over £1,000 now.
