Default Strange box of tricks

I have had this box for years and always assumed it to be telephone related.
However I have never worked out what it really is !
Can anyone tell me ??
Thanks
Edit - just to add ; there looks to have been a label as denoted by 4 holes at the top in the second photo. I had always assumed the slightly blurred/smudged ink stamp to say GPO 47 or something along those lines

This is the label your unit should have, with its Air Ministry Stores Reference Number.

That's the early marking, here's the brass label.

Thanks all for the help and information

Andy - mine must have had the later metal badge, strange that it got removed.

I've come across people who admit to removing a label before selling an item on "because I liked the label". A strangely selfish attitude in my view, but then there's nowt so queer as folk!
