Default Crystal Tester Wanted

Hi,

I've a large collection of crystals that I'd like to test and in some cases identify their frequency. I particularly want to test crystals made during, or just post-WW2, case types 10X/XJ, FT-241, B7G, HC6/U etc etc.

Does anyone have a commercial or military crystal tester, often AKA a crystal impedance tester they wish to dispose of? If so, please P/M me through this forum.

Regards,

Roger

Crystal tester kits are available very cheaply from China.
No idea if they're any good or would suit your purpose though.

Thanks but they are not what I'm looking for.

Hi Roger - take a look at http://www.n5ese.com/xtal_checker.htm
Built and used one of these very successfully when in the PMR 'game'
Readily available components and easy to put together.
Good luck &73 de

Thanks Anton.

The cct looks very like the Pye 1970s base station oscillator board, of which I have a couple. It's fine for HC6/U but I need a more robust crystal current for the 10X types.

I made a crystal checker circuit that lights an LED if it's oscillating with an output for a scope.

The trouble is like most basic circuits, it has a fairly wide range, but doesn't seem to work below 1 MHz. Not only that but I suspect some crystals are designed to work in circuits with specific parameters, so a one-size-fits-all tester design may show some good ones as bad.

Thanks Ian,

I've a similar problem with Leader sig gen that has a crystal socket, but not all crystals work - even when they work in a transmitter. The sort of tester I have in mind is the American military TS-330/TSM, made by Radio Labs as the RFL459A. I'm not limted to that tester but something similar is what I have in mind. It has a 6V6 oscillator and works with pretty much all crystals from HC6/U back to wartime types.

I live in hope!

Roger,

This is what I use. It takes pretty well all crystals except wire ended ones and you can adapt those. The blurb for it is on the vmars site, I put it there. it's really a crystal calibrator and I find it extremely useful. The output will drive a frequency counter. They quite often appear for sale and not too expensive.

Hello Jim,

Hope you're well! I'll add that one to the list, I have seen them offered in the past.
