Tascam CDRW2000
I'm after some advice on this one
The CD drive doesn't work and is dragging the 12V line down. I may try it with an external power supply. The reading across the 12V rail on the CD drive itself is around 45 ohms. I think its too low. This is an IDE PATA CD rom drive, do I have to use the exact drive or can I use a propriety Teac one from Ebay or elsewhere? |

Re: Tascam CDRW2000
there is some stuff about replacing the drive with different versions at the end of this manual- https://elektrotanya.com/tascam_cd-r.../download.html
Looks like you will need to find the correct drive and firmware flash file. Might be worth cracking the old drive open and see if you can find whats dragging the rail down.

Re: Tascam CDRW2000
I do not know if it will help.
A few years back, I had a Philips MCX-2000 for repair; a fearsome beast. The optical drive was faulty, and the people at Charles Hyde told me I needed a copy of the OS software to replace the drive, which I ordered. On fitting the new drive, the beast powered up and installed the drive itself - never even opened the software. If the new drive is not too expensive, it might be worth a try. Kevin |

Re: Tascam CDRW2000
An update:
I bought a new Teac drive from Ebay, it was not exactly the same, it wasn't possible to get one. This is why the original wouldn't work! Now the new one went in and I can play a CD, but when I put a recordable disc, it detects that a blank disc is in the drive, it, gives you the disc recording time but it will not go into record. It's not the record switch, as without a disc, pressing record puts it in monitor mode. What could be stopping me going into record? |

Re: Tascam CDRW2000
Is the disc being used a specific audio CD-R? I believe most audio CD recorders require specific audio CD-R which have an extra levy attached to try and make some of the money back from the money lost from supposed copying of copyrighted CD's. The drives are coded to only write to these discs and not to standard blank CD-R's even though technically they are the same.
That could explain whilst it can see the disc but not write to it. |

Re: Tascam CDRW2000
I've been using only CD-R. What disc should I be buying?

Re: Tascam CDRW2000
I found this with a Philips CDR deck - putting a 'normal' CD-R disc in would cause it to display 'not compatible - use audio CD-R disc'. I didn't know there was a difference, but it seems there is.

Re: Tascam CDRW2000
There is a disc application flag that tells the drive that it is a blank "audio" CD-R afaik.

Re: Tascam CDRW2000
Tascam gear was designed for professional use so should accept normal CD-R's.
Do you have an external IDE to USB enclosure or convertor that you could use to test the drive with a computer? |
