Re: brands of tape now and in the past?
Here some tape defect terms I found out of an old book, esspecialy whith old and cheap tape.
Dropout - sudden, irregular drops in sound level caused by poor distribution or flaking of magnetic coating Clinching - slippage between the tape layers due to loose packing Ridging - a buldge or depression, seen after winding, caused by deformed layer(s) of tape Adhesion - one tape layer sticking to another Cupping - deformation of the backing due to expansion of the magnetic coating and base Curling - twisting of tape when it hangs due to a problem of binding between plastic and coating |

Re: brands of tape now and in the past?
Whilst the focus here seems to be on reel to reel tape here, I can't help but post a snap of one from my cassette collection.. I keep this on display in the workshop as it always makes me smile...
UK folk of a certain generation will know Pinnacle primarily as a supplier of rather cheap and dubious valves (tubes) in the 60's and 70's. Goodness knows where they sourced this tape from - but it fits well with the status the brand had. "Studio Quality" Hmmm... I wonder what type of studio they had in mind? |

Re: brands of tape now and in the past?
Here are a couple of earl (ish) Sony brand cassettes.
I thought at first they might have been intended for an answerphone... they are marked "auto-sensor" which lead me to think they were designed for just such a machine. But the card is also marked: "This cassette is equiped with auto-sensor foil to activate all future automatic cassette recorder features" and phrases such as "capture the strength and delicacy of every sound" suggest more lofty ambitions for them! I wonder, did Sony ever produce such a machine with foil sensors? (best not answer that here) Never seen one. Doubtless Philips who held the cassette standard so close and dear put their foot down to stop such automatic features taking hold! (a bit mean given most of their machines lacked any other form of auto-stop at this time.. if you were lucky a buzzer sounded or a lamp dimly glowed to warn you the machine was straining against the lead out!) |

Re: brands of tape now and in the past?
This thread has got me looking through my collection of tapes. The only oddity I've found is this one.
Don't know where I got it from - probably Oxfam! Vic

Here's two more:
1: TDK Open Reel Tape. Complete with Stickers to go on reel. 2: ORWO - Somebody mentioned them earlier. Here's a box at any rate! Cheers, Steve P

Re: brands of tape now and in the past?
Have you noticed some of those examples are from manufacturers who also make paint or sticky tape.....is it something to do whith polymers?
The two main ones today are derived from BASF which is today's RMIG and the Ampex which is today's Quantegy. |

Re: brands of tape now and in the past?
I still have quite a few Scotch 111 recording tapes.
1.5 Mil acetate, 1200 Feet splicefree lubricated tapes on 7" reels. The recordings on them are in good nick and drive the VU meters to 100%, or 0 dB. No signs of deteriation or acid smell yet. |

Samuel Jones in the UK made the 'Butterfly' gummed lables and tapes which is why they were selected by Thermionics to make the paper backed Recordon and Soundmirror tape using powder supplied by Brush via 3M. Ilford made film stock - Ilford used dyestuffs from ICI and Geigy for their colour film; Zonal added magnetic stripes to film stock. There were very few tape makers but hundreds of 'own brand lables'. Its all in my book "Guide to British tape recorders". TTFN |

Re: brands of tape now and in the past?
Beat me to it - I have a reel of Burgess - been using the pic as my icon on my flickr page. Came to me along with a few other esoteric reels and boxes with my Akai 4000DS - here's another shot of the Burgess : http://www.***********/photos/rubberfunk/280142825/
Cheeky Orpheus getting in on the action there too and here's 3 in a row - Burgess, American and Scotch : http://www.***********/photos/rubberfunk/1805676541/ I'll get more shots up at some point ... Re. having all the photos in one place, I'd happily stick them up in a set on my flickr page, if the respective owners were OK with that. Just a thought anyway ... |

Re: brands of tape now and in the past?
Again, slightly off topic but ORWO also made colour slide film for 35mm cameras, which could be home processed. Very cheap, but slightly weird colours.

Re: brands of tape now and in the past?
That tapedeck.org site is great
The easiest way to take pictures of tapes Ive found is to put them on a scanner - put a bit of acetate on the glass if you're worried about scratching. I have a few that aren't on the site. I wonder if they'll take scans? I notice they have no Memorex. They did some cassettes in the 90s which were very colourful! Found some! And many more! http://www.betaparticle.com/blog/tem...ldGalleryID=35 Last edited by James B; 8th Nov 2007 at 1:26 am. |
