Default Replacement Philishave Rechargeable Battery

My Philishave shaver, Model HQ6849 rechargeable Ni Cad battery has kicked the bucket and a quick search online provides a NiMH 2000Ah type as a replacement.

Would this type be suitable and would there be problems with charging ?

Your advice would be welcome.

If this is the 'wet and dry' type I changed the batteries in mine for the 'NiMH type a number of years ago and its still going strong. Brilliant shavers.

Tagged batteries available on ebay.

Do you know what the capacity of the original battery is? I suspect it will have been rather less than 2000mAH. 700 to 1300mAH were typical values for NiCd cells.

If the charging circuit uses a simple series-resistor then fitting a larger-capacity NiMH battery should be OK, it'll just take longer to charge fully. If the charging circuit includes any sort of sensing system (like a diode to detect the battery getting hot) and a charge-cutoff circuit then this will not necessarily be NiMH-compatible though you'll probably get away with it, just keep an eye on it for the first few charges and see if it gets hotter than the old one did.

Charging is likely to be suboptimal but it probably won't matter. It may be better not to leave it permanently on charge when not in use.

G6Tanuki,

I have the original battery (just removed it) and not any info on it, except Ni-CD, Recycle but there is this string of numbers: 1.800.822.8837 (probably a Philips part number?) and it's the original one fitted from purchase some years ago,

No, it's a basic model and bought sometime in the 1990's.

No, only left on charge for about an hour prior to trimming and tidying up my English Civil War beard prior to an event.

That number is a US battery-recycling information hotline - See https://www.call2recycle.org/epa-cer...cycling-label/

If there's a Philips model-number on the shaver itself it may be worth searching for an old online ad for it which may give some specification details that include battery capacity.

If you're really worried about MiMH problems, you can still get full fat NiCd.......

Being fed up with funeral adverts on TV, I decided to have a go at the shaver and in my box of "one day they'll be handy" batteries in the cupboard, I came across a Ni-MH AA battery that looked unused with a rating of 800 thingy-ma-bobs.

30 minutes later, having blown away my previous beard shave, fitted the battery, re-assembled I plugged it in and WHOOPIE it started to charge and I'm leaving it to charge for an hour.

I cheated after 15 mins and it worked well and again after another 15 mins...……...I'll report later...…

Cheers

Nothing to lose- worst case is just a dead NiMH but that'll probably take a few years!

Shaver looks remarkably familiar, though......

Guess they didn't reinvent the wheel.

the one in my philishave is the same thickness as an AA and the same length as an AAA. It's an NiMh, an AA size is too long to get inside, it's the same shaver as post 12.

I scrapped the shaver as the proper philips battery was too dear.

Bother..... the cell in mine isn't wonderful- only about 2-3 shaves per charge these days.

Edit: Took mine apart and found it's definitely an AA size NiMH in there. Phew!

Surely "stick it back on charge for a top-up after after every use" would be the expected duty-cycle??

Maybe for an electric toothbrush which sits on a charging stand but the shaver has to be plugged in using the same lead as a mains operated one would have. Since there's a relatively complex switchmode fast charger built in I don't think it was designed for other than "charge it when it's flat" service.

Certainly it would go quite happily for a couple of weeks- probably ten shaves or so when it was new. It's on its third set of cutter heads now, so it hasn't done too badly, but £3 for a battery is more attractive than £30 for a new shaver!

This is an excellent site for finding cell types from their dimensions. Scroll down to see the table.

Just an update, my razor is still working fine, since I fitted the 800mA NiMH Battery.
