PYE 444 Cruiser

Hi

I've got a rather shabby one of these which has been in the family since new.
The extending aerial is a bit knackered and it has a few dents and bashes, but still works pretty well.
On removing the back I found a yellow wire and a brown wire hanging loose and presume these should be attached to the external aerial sockets on the back panel.
Could anyone have a look at theirs and let me know which goes where?

Here are some pictures of the wiring in mine.

The yellow wire is connected to the socket marked E (external aerial) and goes to switch T on the PCB.
The white wire is connected to the socket marked AE and goes to L7.
The brown wire is connected to the car aerial socket (not fitted to all of these radios) and goes the the chassis tag.

I think the white & brown wires may incorrectly connected in mine, as the car aerial is connected to L7 on the circuit diagram.
I'm not convinced the connectors in picture four are original either.

I've got the schematic but thought it would be easier for me to have some visual aid ...
Amazingly those little stickers had been stuck on mine too!
Mine has a black wire connecting "E" and the outer for the car ariel and my white goes to the centre of car ariel.
Interesting to see the rubber grommet at the base of the ariel - mine's missing along with the screw - 3 out of 4 rubber feet missing too.

I've just had another look at the radio and found solder on the back of the car aerial connector outer, also the brown wire is barely attached.
I now think all the wires are connected to the wrong place.

The correct wiring is most likely;

White wire from L7 to car aerial connector centre.
Brown wire from chassis tag (earth?) to socket E and car aerial connector outer via black wire.
Yellow wire from switch T to socket AE (aerial external).

Also all of the rubber feet are very badly perished on mine.

one more question...your aerial is on a rubber base. Presumably this has a screw running through the case up into the aerial right? I will have to fabricate something I think.

Yes the aerial has a 4BA screw holding it in place and the rubber base is made from two pieces, these are not as badly perished as the feet so may be replacements. I'm not convinced the countersunk screw is original either.

Tap washers spring to mind as a possible modification for the Ariel mounting...

I've fixed the extending aerial and re-attached the aerial inside the radio and am getting fair reception on MW but very faint on LW. In order to get the thing up and running I replaced the original large 9v battery connector with a PP9 size one. Is there any way that this could reduce performance or will I have to delve deeper?
