Default Resistor power rating

Ive found a load of old resistors out that are loose, I can of course get the resistance from the colour code, but not the power rating. Can anyone tell me a likely power rating based on size?

These are 10mm x 3.5mm

Im looking through them because I need some rated 1W, however I suspect these might be lower?

They sound, based on the size, like 0.5 W or maybe 1 W resistors.

Could you try a kamikaze test? Rig one up to an adjustable power supply, push a watt through it and wait and see what happens .....

Rating will depend on what type and how old. Something that size could be anything from 0.25W to maybe 0.6W.

A good picture would help with speculation.....

Best picture I can manage at moment attached,

The more I ponder them, the more im thinking 1/2w

As it turns out, I dont have any in the right values for the job im doing, but since I have thousands of 1/4w resistors, im just going to use those, but a lot more of them!

From the picture, definitely not 1W !

They look similar to types I have in my spares box but I didn't get any original packaging either. I assumed 0.4 to 0.6 W so they went in with the 1/2 watt.

Are they 5 band types at 1 or 2% ?

They're ½ watt rating. I have used those in the past. And I suggest you check their resistance. I have found some that although unused, have measured out-of-tolerance to a large degree.
