Serenade Radio
I wonder if I could point those in search of nostalgic wireless in the direction of www.serenade-radio.com
This is a non-profit non-commercial station set up and run by enthusiasts (including me!) purely for the love of radio. It aims to evoke the days of the Light Programme / Radio 2 before it started to pursue the 'yoof' market. Programmes commence early in the morning with an hour of light music- The Queen's Hall Light Orch, Robert Farnon etc. Continuity announcements and the pips are used throughout the day. Saturday night's 'Dinner At Eight' features mood music from LPs popular in the 1960s; standard radio fare at the time, but seldom heard now. 'Bottom Drawer' is a series presented by Robert Walton and first broadcast in 1978, featuring many recordings taken from 78s. Sunday tea-times include a Mantovani programme and 'Sammes Songs' featuring the Mike Sammes Singers (in the style of 'Sing Something Simple'). The station closes down at night with the National Anthem, before relaying the restful sound of the waves through the small hours... It seems to be proving popular with vintage radio enthusiasts and is ideal for piping through your old sets via a pantry transmitter. Re: Serenade Radio
Thanks just listening to the "Jazz" program now. Excellent knowledgeable presentation and sound quality. I like the retro intention but have a more eclectic taste generally. You can go too far. I always thought that "Sing Something Simple" was accurately named even as a child. Remember Hancock made a whole program about how boring Sundays used to be and the Light Program was a major culprit in that respect.
I will be very interested to hear the Robert Walton programs with 78's-how far in is this series? Shades of Desmond Carrington I think! I was checking out recent Radio 3 Late Junction programs last night, re some Robert Wyatt tracks they were playing in the week and noticed they were going a bit retro mainstream themselves-you may be more contemporary than you think! The website presenter panel only seemed to bring up info on the same person, whoever you select, when I tried it. I hope it's just a glitch and not deliberate! Dave W |

Re: Serenade Radio
I was eagerly awaiting the start of this station last month and I have to say it's really wonderful!
Just my cup of tea musically with a nice, laid back presentation. It's great to hear that someone is still flying the flag for Easy Listening music! I've got a Raspberry Pi / Griffin iTrip (legal) FM transmitter playing it to the VHF radios in my house. Congratulations to those behind this station and long may it continue. Neil. |

Re: Serenade Radio
Thank you Dave and Neil.
There are a handful of specialist programmes; jazz and country to name but two. 78s and dance bands do get quite an airing on both 'Bottom Drawer' (now around 4 weeks into it's run) and 'Pure Nostalgia' which is on as I write. Ideal material for pantry transmittersas you say. I've listened today on a big old Bush PB12, a 60s Cossor transistor (typical 'kitchen' radio) and now I've got my Philco BT1848 TV/Radio running and sounding fab whilst I get the coal fire lit for the night. Steve PS- All the presenter info should be available. Must be a glitch... |

Re: Serenade Radio
Thanks Steve, I would not have known but for your post, listening now! TuneIn radio for tablets as a direct link to the station. I can use my old iPod to feed a legal Belkin FM transmitter.

Re: Serenade Radio
Oh wow! I've just taken a brief listen and it sounds great. Some great jazz and swing music playing atm. The older I get, the more I find I enjoy US big band swing from 50/60/70 years ago, and the British light music so beloved of the BBC in days of yore. We occasionally have what we call our 'Retro Dinners' which usually evoke the mood (and the food, such as prawn cocktail and steak Dianne) and music of the 50's, 60's or 70's and I usually put together playlists of easy listening stuff from the era in question. This radio station will be great to have playing in the background. There's so little of this stuff on the radio these days, thanks for making the effort. Bookmarked!

Re: Serenade Radio
Got it on while I do some typing. It reminds me of the old Britain Radio and Radio 390. I think it must be the jingles, as there is no presenter atm.

Re: Serenade Radio
Brilliant! Thanks for alerting us to this. I've just discovered that it's available on the Reciva radio portal that my Logik IR100 uses. The streaming rate is 192kb/s and the quality is excellent.
A nice source for my FM pantry transmitter.

Re: Serenade Radio
I have listened to a couple of programmes on Serenade Radio, and quite agree, the style and content is reminiscent of the musical part of the Light programme in the 1950s and 60s.
There are other, similar, internet stations, including Angel Radio (I don't have their URL to hand, which is 'run by older people for older people', and 'The Wireless from Age UK' www.ageuk.org.uk/thewireless. THese two stations are also on FM & DAB, Angel Radio in Hampshire & IOW, The Wireless in London on DAB Famous names such as David Hamilton, David Jensen, Martyn Lewis, & Graham Dene have shows on 'The Wireless'. |

Re: Serenade Radio
Serenade Radio is fabulous. It's style is completely professional and it has some knowledgeable, seasoned presenters. They seem to have huge range of music to draw on. In my opinion it's better than the Radio 390 of the 'sixties and if any service should be called 'The Light Programme' today - this is it!
An excellent source for pantry transmitters. Steve

Re: Serenade Radio
Excellent stuff! I'm into all kinds of music, I went through phases of punk, ska, electro, dub reggae etc. and I still love them dearly but sometimes I just need something a bit gentler. Thus this site is now in my bookmarks, many thanks for bringing this up.
Regards, Paul
