Olly,

Welcome to the Forum, and thanks for your input.

I would expect the xxxx to be in the region of 2700;
if you're bashful, perhaps you could send me a confirmation, or rebuttal, by PM.

Many thanks

My contribution

Model 8 Mk 2 2927 C 663D
Model 8 Mk 3 19343 665
Model 8 Mk 5 5270-046 CH6

I am sure the CH6 is not part of the number, anyone know what it means?

Evening All,

I Inherited 3 Avos from my late father a few years back, 2 mk 8s (I think) although they're slightly different from each other, and 1 multiminor.

Avo mk8 SNo: 17530.369 & Sno: 18785, (this ones marked "test set multirange No.1 High Sensitivity" on the case)

Both have hammerite metal enclosures, and came from the now non-existent REME Civilian workshops in Strensall (York), where my Dad was an elec. engineer.

Multiminor: Sno:55024

I'm a mechanical eng myself *shame* so they don't get used, but it'd be nice to know a bit more about them.

My model 8 mark ? has the scale marked 'Test Set Multirange No.1 High Sensitivity 6625-99-105-7050' and ser. no. 2833-967. It sits in a metal case sprayed bronze metallic.

My model 7 has serial no. 71047-37524.

My long suffering (about 33 years) 8X (Panclimatic), with metal outer rear case and green carrying case (handle now getting a bit tatty) is No. 3130-C-7637. It had a replacement rectifier about 31 years ago after starting to read low, other than that it keeps taking whatever I throw at it.....

I also have a back-up (and little used) 8 mark 5, bearing serial number "40501 8V/11/76" on a sticker on the side of the case. It has a leather case with self destructing stitching; there seems to have been a quality control problem here!

Regards

Ian

Thanks for keeping them coming ....

Bryan,
your Model 8 Mk ? is a specific NATO version (designated TS1 not Model 8).
It's actually a Model 8 Mk II, modified for a 3-10-30 rather than a 2.5-10-25 range sequence, and with the extreme reistance ranges (L.R and INS) excluded.
They also dropped decibels from the scale (although with a 3-10-30 range sequence it might have been appropriate to keep it).

Sentinel,
if the quality problems had only reached the stitching ....
With a little bit of the original MacAdie ethos, the Model 5 would have been an excellent meter, but this was the Thorn environment : go for new unproven technology to save cost, and ... pay the price !

Hi just been given an Avo 8, rescued from a skip in very good condition externally, have not put batteries in it yet (will have to look at option to do that as no manual).

Its serial number is 47869-c-556

Can you tell me what model it is, would be much appreciated.

Yes, it's a fairly early Model 8 Mark II.
Has it got a 500 volt DC range, or just a gap between the 250 & 1000 volt switch positions ?

Mmmmmmmm

Finally acquired an AVO EA 113 that works, well it has some bizzare behaviour but that is apparently normal! Serial Number is 5990.

Not everyones cup of tea but I've wanted one for about 35 years!

I will get my other 2 faulty ones going though (already logged here)! Just a matter of time really!

Given to me a couple of years ago
AVO model 9 MkIV Serial 22115 94/11/70
Is the last part a crazy date code?

Handy for the anodes of the 6146s on my FT101ZD MKIII
