Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
One Pye dual standard (11U), one Ferguson portable (T45), one HMV portable (forgotten the model...), one Perdio Portarama, one Philips TVette. All of these sets are fed from an Aurora. Signals from Crystal Palace. Croydon (Surrey) area.

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
16 sets capable of displaying a stable picture, a few of them still need a bit of work, I mainly use either the Ekco TMB272 or a T161.
For signals I have the one solitary Aurora, fed from a Toshiba VHS/DVD combo, with a free view box in one scart and a Sumvision SD card player connected to the front AV in. The Toshiba is also the modulator for the 625 UHF TV’s. The sets are used in my workshop in Coningsby, Lincolnshire. Prior to this they were all located in Daventry, Northamptonshire until December 2015. Regards Lloyd |

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
3 working but still in need of finishing off. Pilot 'Spacemaker (1959), Marconiphone VT161 (1959), GEC 2000DST (D/S 1964). About 10 more on the 'to do' pile!
Like 'MarkPirate' above, I don't have a modern TV or digital signal receiving capabilities, so these sets get used regularly from a VCR or DVD and an Aurora converter. Location is North Essex. Cheers Nick |

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
Currently working 405 TVs:
2x Sony 9-90UB dual standard 405-625 One of the Sonys has been used a lot by me on 625 over the 20+ years I've had it. The other I found at a car boot sale about 3 years ago, like new, in its original box. It works perfectly on both standards. 1x Bush TV22 Mk.2 (1952) single channel 405 receiver, tuned to channel 1 Alexandra Palace. This came from an antiques market in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. I reckon it would have received Alexandra Palace from there. I never altered the tuning on it. After restoration, it started receiving channel 1 so I left it as it was originally. In the to-do pile: Sony 9-306UB, Perdio Portarama My 405 signal source is an Aurora set to channel 1, fed by a digital set-top box or DVD player. I have to admit that I very rarely use the 405 converter. I'm too afraid of using the TV22 too much in case the LOPT burns out, which would be the end for the set. Most of my vintage TVs are single standard 625 monochrome models. They can be used with just a digibox, no Aurora needed. Location: High Wycombe (about 30 miles north-west of London) |

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
19 working 405 sets at the time of writing, and 2 restorations in progress.
All fed through Aurora converter. Choice of dvd, vcr, or tvonics set top box with hard drive. Great for recording period programmes! Matt Portsmouth |

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
Being obsessed by statistics etc, I decided to look through the responses to see what standards converters people admit to. What I have spotted so far are:
Aurora: 22 Darius: 2 David Grant: 1 Dinosaur: 1 Domino: 2 Hedghog: 8 PC card: 1 ... along with various pattern generators and a Pye Lynx camera.

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
One Murphy V310 which got lots of use over the Christmas holiday. I also have a Sony 9-9UB which seems to work fine after not being plugged in for over 20 years!
One Aurora standards converter and I hope to be making a Hedghog in the very near future. Location Norwich. Regards David

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
Not used recently, but I'm down to a Pineapple converter and two Philips TVettes (both of which now need attending to).
I still have (I think) the 405 VHS off air recording made not long before closedown. I have some modified 'Tandy' game modulators as the RF source and even some Labgear VHF -> UHF and UHF -> VHF units to get a Band III signal. At one time, when I had both converters, I could watch BBC on Band I and ITV on Band III simultaneously - across the main room using real TV aerials to receive the signals! |

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
Hello.
I'm not around much these days but would it not be a good idea to replicate this thread on the other UK vintage sites that also have collectors of 405 line sets, who don't frequent this particular site? |

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
Yes indeed! If those who are members on the other vintage radio boards would like to start a similar thread, we could combine the tally at the end.
I was going to add an 'estimate' at the end for those collectors I personally know of who don't post here. Also, past customers of my own for restored sets that are not included here, who are several. Then there's the Dulwich Museum of course. How many working 405-line sets reside there? Steve |
