Default Goblin 844 Teasmade

I have just resurrected my mother's old teasmade. It works, but a lot of boiling water spurts out of the 2-3mm hole in the kettle lid while it fills the teapot.

Can anyone suggest a cure except blocking it?

There is a quite hard flat (plastic?) washer round the outside of the lid. Is something missing between the metal lid and the plastic handle? Should there be a pressure safety valve?

There should be a baffle inside the kettle lid, restricting that vent hole even further. A small amount of steam will always escape from it but the idea is, under normal circumstances, it should be easier for the pressure to displace water via the kettle spout than to eject steam from the vent hole. But if the spout is blocked, the vent hole provides a way for the pressure to escape.

Could the kettle spout be partly blocked by limescale? My water supply comes from the Peak District, so you can imagine what it's like .....

I`ve got one, and if I fill the kettle to the water line, the same thing happens. I find the best way to stop it is to fill the water to about half an inch below the water line, and all is well!

It`ll still give you plenty of tea

Also, don`t block it - that vent is there for safety, if you block it and something goes wrong with the kettle spout, you will have a bomb on your hands......DON`T DO IT!!

Our 844 has been in daily use for years now.

As others have said, the vent hole is there to allow steam to escape while the kettle starts to heat and should never be blocked!
I cannot see how water can get to the vent

There's no reason to be too concerned about the water level as long as it's sufficient for the kettle base to click down and not above the mark.

The most important thing is to see that the seal on the kettle lid is intact. As the kettle heats up, steam escapes from the vent; when it reaches boiling the hole cannot escape sufficiently, so boiling water is poured into the teapot from the spout and when the kettle empties, the base clicks up, light turns on and kettle switches off.

Your Teasmade seems as though it's probably working fine.

If you block the vent it will pour water that is not hot enough.
