I always associate that particular speech-impediment with Orstralians and certain kinds of East-coast Americans.

There's a lot of classism associated with language though: I was always amused by a rather lower-middle-class type from my youth who referred to his car as an "Orstin" thinking it made him sound upper-middle-class.

And why is "Ralph", as in Vaughan-Williams, pronounced "Raphe" by some people? Likewise, as someone with significant Welsh heritage, "Powell" should be always pronounced to rhyme with "Owl", and definitely not "Pole" as some would choose.

An Englishman's way of speaking absolutely classifies him,
The moment he talks he makes some other Englishman despise him.

See the link on post 39 for interesting information on Ralph/'Raif'.

Powell to Pole: This is the clipped vowel sound of 1930s RP that the OP is looking for. Try saying "Powell" whilst shortening the vowel sounds as much as possible and you'll get the result. Imagine you are Brian Sewell.

Particularly common amongst the young. The result of a lot of Australian soaps on TV?

Another one that's not been mentioned (I don't think) is putting an "r" into words, as in drawing being pronounced as "drawring." I don't know if this is just a regional thing?

I remember him in the '50s having a go at the B.B.C. over referring to Dennis Compton as "Dennis Cumpton" and several other similar aberrations.
He declared himself in "great anticipation" of the next time a B.B.C. newsreader used the word "Bombing".

Jenny Agutter would be my choice if she'd do it for expenses only. She has a lovely voice and speaks beautifully, although it's not RP.

New Zealand had it first.

Historically we've led the world in a number of things. We should own up to the annoying ones as well as the good....

Have you found anyone yet? My wife has a very good RP accent, I used her for my speaking clock project. Pm me and I'll send you a few samples.

I've heard the radio commentator for the 1965 FA Cup Final referred to Ian St John as "Ian Sinjin" throughout.
