Roberts RP28; how to remove chassis.
Hello,
First apologies for my english that is far from good. I just received from UK my third used Roberts RP28. This one does not work, neither with the original Roberts mains adaptor nor with the batteries. Just dead. Any suggestions? I am not able even to open it. Any trick or tips? Many thanks Regards Carlo |

Re: Help from Italy, a Roberts RP28 needs repair!
Hi Carlo,
You open the RP28 as follows:- 1. Remove carrying handle by pushing each end downwards. DO NOT push down from the centre of the handle. You will see, feel and hear the handle unclip from its pivots. 2. Remove the two bolts/pivots now exposed by the removal of the handle. 3. Remove the screw beneath the radio which secures the base/battery box. 4. Withdraw chassis through top of cabinet. The power on/off control on the RP28 can be troublesome. Do you have and can you use a test meter to check this? Roberts radios are also famous for earphone sockets short-circuiting. Check for that as well; easiest way is to see if the radio works with an earphone connected. There's probably a small glass fuse on the chassis. Check that for continuity. If it's failed, find out why. Try these and let us know how you get on. |

Bonjorno Carlo
Ah Milano, I have visited El Domo, molto bella. But that is the limit of my Italian! You do not say why you cannot open the radio, if it is not working on the mains adaptor (is the mains adaptor giving an output, measure with volt meter) or batteries I would check the wiring from this connected, as well as the battery connectors and wiring up to the on/off switch first. But first you have to get in to the radio. Geof |

Re: Help from Italy, a Roberts RP28 needs repair!
Thank you very much Darren and Geof,
I checked my radio with earphones and it does not work. The radio doesn't buzz. (The seller told me the radio was ok although he couldn't pick up stations on long wave.) So I removed the handle and I tried to work on the screw on the base of the radio, but it seems to be an endless screw. I know I am dumb, but I cannot remove it. Any further suggestions? I would need a step by step teacher... eh eh... Thank you again, Ciao Carlo |

Not sure what you mean regarding the screw. Is it not withdrawing as you turn it? If this is the case then the female thread may well be stripped.

Yes, the screw doesn't work properly. Do have to dare to force it? And what is the better way to do it without breaking it?
Thank you Last edited by Carlo; 12th Dec 2007 at 5:03 pm. Reason: to be more specific |

The screw's held captive by a clip behind the battery carrier, so it won't come right out. I suspect you've undone the screw and the base is sticking to the vinyl case covering on both sides. It can be very reluctant to move - either try gripping with a thumb once you've removed the battery cover, or sliding a thin blade carefully along between the sides of the base and the front and back of the cabinet to break any seal.

Re: Help from Italy, a Roberts RP28 needs repair!
I want to thank you all.
Thank to your answers I repaired my radio. After havong opened it (the screw was a problem, but I solved it with no harm) I noticed that the speaker had only one wire, the other (brown) was dangling. So I fixed it. Easy and silly, but without your help I would not been able even to open the radio. Thank you again, Best regards, Carlo |

Well done Carlo, and thank you also Darren as I did not know how to remove the chassis of this model.
