Question Grundig TK5 no record

Hi...I'm trying to restore an old TK5...playback fine but no record.
Does anyone have a circuit diag.,or a source to get one ?
Be very grateful for any help or suggestion.
Chris.

Hi Chris
I believe the circuit for the TK5 was published in the "Radio and TV servicing" series of books(by molloy and poole). Try the reference section of your local main or central library. Ours here in Bristol has the complete set of R&TVS, Trader sheets, and modern TV diagrams. I have a copy of the diagram somewhere(I think!). From memory the record bias is produced by an EL42 valve. Swap it with the EL42 on the A/F output, and see if the record works and the audio doesn't, to prove the valve. While you are waiing for me to find the diagram, change all those brown Wima capacitors which look like toffees(don't overlook the 0.2 one tucked away under the deck) for modern replacements. You may well find that record will then work. Good luck.
Tim

Does it ERASE? If yes, bias OK, record signal getting lost somewhere.. If recording is weak and superimposed upon previous program no bias.

A complete set of "Radio & TV Servicing" books is held at the Central Resources Library at Hatfield. There is no index volume, but someone may be able to confirm which volume covers the TK5, to save you having to search through several of them.

Hope this helps,

Roy

Hello Roy...thanks for that.I've sent for a service pack from "justradios"but
will check out Hatfield in the mean time and have a look at the bias cct if I can find the volume.

Done the EL42,no erase so suspect bias osc.The EL42 lights but is cool.Have sent for service pack and will look in Hatfield library as well.
Thanks for reply.

Just a reminder, it's the CRL at New Barnfield (off Travellers Lane), not Hatfield Town Centre.

Cheers

Hello Chris, all the info you have received is OK but if you have a look at the bias unit itself, you will find the answer to be obvious as erase is also missing, there will be a burnout in the unit, usually the resistor/cap.

As mentioned if you wish to bring the machine up to standard, the caps. should all be replaced. Very basic machine but capable of pretty good mono results if replayed through an external amp/speaker. The internal speaker is it's weak point.

Cheers.

My index says TK5 Mk II is in 1958-59.

I think mickjjo was refering to the service data by email that Paul Senning offers. The cost of this is one pound ninety nine, payed by paypal and is delivered to your computer in less than 15 minutes. The article on Paul's website is written by Tim Pullen.

Those 'orrible brown Wema's should be ejected where found especially where used as coupling and de-coupling capacitors! They have a nasty habit of going s/c and will cause all sorts of problems if given the chance .
