Leak 2002 cassette deck, how much is it worth?
Hi everybody,
I was wondering if anybody could tell me how much the above mentioned might be worth? The unit exterior is in excellent condition, and everthing works ok, although the sound quality sounds rather poor & muffled. My guess is the tape head is worn. Would a new one be easy to find/ expensive? Thanks, Ian |

Re: Leak 2002 cassette deck, how much is it worth?
Hi,
I have the same model; it was actually made by Nakamichi in their earlier days. You'll find it listed on the Naks.com website on this page. But, as is typical for hi-fi cassette decks from this era, they're just not particularly good even working correctly with perfect heads. The technology of the day just wasn't up to the job of getting true hi-fi results from the slow tape speed and narrow track width. I'm not sure if they're collectible, but "collectible" doesn't necessarily mean "valuable" if there aren't that many collectors and plenty of items. I keep my Leak 2002 more as a historical curiosity rather than something which gets used; it's no match to later machines. But as a Nakamichi enthusiast it's interesting to have an example of one of their earliest machines. My Nakamichi CR-1 sounds superb and remains part of my main hi-fi system in the living room. Progress in head design, electronics, the mechanics of the transport - not to mention tape formulations - make the later generation of cassette decks worthy of a place in a hi-fi system, particularly Nakamichi machines. Sorry if this is disappointing, but in my opinion early cassette decks just don't perform well enough to be useable; if a piece of equipment isn't particularly useable then there tends to be little interest. That is merely my opinion, though; others may choose to differ. Cheers, Kat |
