Default Piece of trivia

On the old radio dials 194 metres is marked 'Third'. If you live in Edinburgh, it is now 'Forth'.

In the Forest of Dean it would be "Severn" presumably

No, Radio 7 (now 4 Extra) is on DAB (220MHz or so) this does cause problems in non compliant DAB radios that use 8 characters for the station (the standard is 16) they both give Radio 4!

Now you only have to phone in and ask them to play a bit of Genesis: Firth of fifth. (Great guitar solo towards the end!)

Is it only me who imagined this last sentence read out in the style of the World Service shipping forecast?

Pedantic mode... The World Service doesn't do a shipping forecast, it's Radio 4. Same result.

Football result commentator voice needed with an old teleprinter head bobbing away on-screen.

James Alexander Gordon - God rest his soul.

I loved that teleprinter head marking time between football results on Grandstand when I were a lad...

Pedantry is good, it's educational. Either it's changed since 1993 when I last recall hearing the shipping forecast (!!!), or time has not been kind to my memory! Most likely the latter. Glad somebody knows what I meant at least.

"Sailing by" (or the last part of it if the previous item over-runs) is played at around 00.45, followed by the shipping forecast, followed by the National Anthem, followed by the World Service at 01.00.

I always thought "Sailing by" was the elevator music while the coverage elevates to what is going on in the sky

The 01.00 handover reminds me that Luxembourg used to start at about 7 with Garner Ted Armstrong's "The world tomorrow" and end at 01.00 with "At the end of the day" and the Luxembourg National Anthem, the only foreign national anthem whose tune I know by heart!

To be pedantic(!) Luxembourg used to start at 6PM GMT (7AM BST/CET) The English language service ended at Midnight (GMT) (0100BST/CET), although i recall that at some time in the early/mid 1960s, the English programs used to continue until 2AM GMT. Can't remember how the Luxembourg Anthem goes, though!

At college we had a guy from Keynsham who had never listened to Radio Luxembourg, and until we told him, had wondered why people always spelled out the name when he said where he was from.
