Bakelite radio cabinet identification.
Hello everyone.
First post and asking for help already! Can anyone identify this cabinet? Saved from the tip because it was undamaged. The set is a basket case but the case will polish up, thought someone must have a project waiting for a case. I thought it looked a bit Ekco-ish? |

Re: Bakelite radio cabinet identification.
Welcome and it's an EKCO UAW78 I think... https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/ekco_uaw78_uaw_78.html

Re: Bakelite radio cabinet identification.
Thats it thanks,
I thought it looked like an EKCO but couldn't see the model on an image search. If anyone here needs one shout before its put on an online auction. I need the space so its getting a last chance then the tip its beyond easy restoring. The chassis and IF coils are corroded badly speaker missing etc. |

It is likely to get crushed if it is sent by post.

Don't bin any of it. That is a fairly rare and collectable set and I am sure someone could bring it back to life.

I'll make a journey to pick up a radio now rather than leaving to the fate of a postal service.

A photo of the chassis. I should think its chances of survival in the post are limited. Definitely available if someone wants to take it on.
If anyone can collect it and wants it, it can be in Malvern in office hours, Monmouth out of office hours, or I can get it to Chippenham also given more notice. |

Re: Bakelite radio cabinet identification.
If anyone is definitely interested in this, I could pick it up from Malvern on this Wednesday morning or Monmouth on most Sunday afternoons then baby sit it in Leominster or near Ross-on-Wye until the FCS could manage onward travel. It's rather smaller than the pair of speakers I last did this with! I usually go to RWB auctions and I'll be travelling to Devon from Leominster and back in June if that helps with any takers.
I'm not interested in the set myself- I'm not a big bakelite fan.

Re: Bakelite radio cabinet identification.
I have a feeling this might actually be the remains of a BAW78, as it shows no signs of either the dropper resistor (or its mountings) or smoothing capacitor that a UAW78 should have.
I cant make out the valve type that is visible, it would be a VP2B for battery or either VP13C/VPU1 for mains... and I can only see the "VP" bit. By some coincidence one of these has been discussed here previously, and it was in a similar state! https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=84752 Pete PS I'm trying to talk myself out of a challenge! Re: Bakelite radio cabinet identification.
OK I've had a quick look. It has a battery harness coming out the right side of the chassis.
The valve at the back is indeed a VP2B. This set is slowly growing on me. I might well give it a good polish, fit a new dial, and make a baffle board and fit a speaker, I think the comment about being kept in a garden isn't far off the truth! |

Re: Bakelite radio cabinet identification.
...and you'd have a lovely ornament if nothing else. Or, dare I say it, fit a Bluetooth module and make it into a very attractive and functional piece, without any guilt

Re: Bakelite radio cabinet identification.
That's what I will probably do, now I have seen some stereo 8" speakers somewhere, a single bass unit with two directional mid tweeters. IIRC they're for fitting stereos to classic cars with a single speaker in the rear deck.

Re: Bakelite radio cabinet identification.
Hello,
Should you still want to get rid of the radio I would be very pleased to take it. I could collect as I am only a few miles from Monmouth. Thanks, Richard |

Re: Bakelite radio cabinet identification.
Hi Richard,
Theres a chap Interested in it in Middlesborough, but a bird in the hand and all that. It is quite a rare set so definetley worth saving. I do have some other sets here too I am getting rid of you may be interested in for bits. also have a load of chassis and a working Solartron osciloscope in the back of the truck (now minus valves) destined for the tip this morning if you want any of it free of course. but you will have to be quick. It will all be gone this afternoon. |
