For me, I would go back 40 years and buy a load of shares in Apple and Microsoft.

Easier to transport back with me through the time portal (no need for heavy lifting) and I could now realise the profits to buy the things I want.

Perhaps I would also bring back a complete Collins S-line HF station though...

Greetings all.

Bit sad and off topic but as much as I love radio and electrical and mechanical instruments I would pick up and put into my pocket to bring back with me a small item.

I would go back to the 12th of January 2005 and pick up the keys to our Ford Falcon family car. It did have an RF ID chip in the key so sort of in line with this topic.

If I had the key with me we would still have our 18yr old son Benjamin with us.

I won't dwell on it but to my wife and I that would be worth everything.

My Grandfather, "Grandpop" he was an inspiration. He died in 1992, he would love to see the tech that has been invented since then!
I might save some of the tellies I scrapped and maybe a few of those big old valves I used for air rifle practice!

I'm with Terry (#14) and Paul (#20).
But if I had to come back here, I would be happy just to bring all the bits of electronics that got dumped when I moved (twice). Mind you that would be a lot of EF86s, EL34s, EL84s, KT66s, ECL8xs, ECC81s, ECC82s, ECC83s, (12AT7, 12AU7 and 12AX7), 6V6s (in all guises) and rectifier valves. Yes, I know!

! There were 3 complete 100W guitar amp chassis and a Williamson amplifier which worked a treat after replacing the heater wiring. Oh dear, getting quite nostalgic.... If only I knew then what I know now).
And not wishing to slag off Windows 7, 8 and 10, my old Windows 98 laptop computer.

I wonder if some of those things mentioned above would be cheaper than they are today? Some things are cheaper now, like 6080 valves, where there is no general audio purpose.

The real gold is that point where people think there is no value anymore in the item, and it is either dumped or sold for a pittance. So it would be the junk shops and small-ads for me in the early '70's.

I'd do it the other way round. I'd take a load of antibiotics and other useful medicine back to before they existed

Inevitably, I would seek out those fantastic Pamphonic "reproducers" that they supplied in the 30s to nobility and top families in Europe. Prices were from £200gns upwards!
I doubt if a single one has survived. Only pictures remain, and I would love to have one to show the kids of today what jaw-dropping audio tech looked and sounded like 90 years ago.
A 20W amp into a 15" speaker in a 4ft square infinite baffle in perfect Walnut or mahogany, with twin decks on the control plinth - Wonderful!
(At least I'll avoid the scrum round the rare valve stockpiles...)

Shure V15MR carts (last one with berylium tube cantilever)

Lots of vinyl records that I didn't get then and can't afford now!

If space and size was no object, I would bring the entire 1936 Alexandra Palace television set up back home with both the Marconi-EMI system and more importantly the entire Baird studio set up with spotlight studio film cameras etc.. This includes both the sound and vision transmitters and original mast set up. Also plenty of spare EMITRON tubes ECT. plus Battersea power station to run it!!

If size was an issue, I would like to take home the old street light outside my grandparents house in yate!! It was a steel column type that had approximately 5 degree lean on it when the bin men reversed into it. It had a Thorn Gamma 5 post top lantern with a clear bowl which looked to me as a kid as a flying saucer with an 80W MBF lamp in it. The internal rubber seal to the top canopy had fallen inside and was like that for many years. I remember the flickering as it struck and slowly warmed up. I was fascinated with it. Now replaced with a new (currently still vertical!!) post and a boring LED light.

If you did want to come back to present time, there would be no shortage of spares...need a PM2...no problem! Through the time portal to the corner radio shop, back through and fit a new boxed valve........if only!!!! There must be a problem with that though...if you used spares from then and brought them back to now, wouldn't that have created a shortage back then.....

....which would mean that you couldn't have brought the spares back because there was a shortage....errr anyone know where Einstein lived? Bring him back and he can explain it!!

I think I'd peruse shops selling television sets in early 1939, and pick up a nice Ekco TC103 to bring back...
