What are you Listening to?

There are two online stations called Pumpkin FM which are totally devoted to vintage comedy shows from the BBC, viz Navy Lark, Round the Horne, Hancock, Just a Minute etc Some of that stuff is still quite funny, some less so.

Re the present output on R4, I think that quite a few of us might sense both a gender gap and an age gap.

The BBC in general? I dunno. For sure it's become populist to say that, and I guess if a person thinks that they're constantly hearing biassed comments and themes (throughout the BBC that is) then it's easy to take that view. But - go figure - I find people on the right and the left saying the same thing! My conclusion? as an organisation it doesn't appear to be terribly biased all considered, more a case of people thinking that it should reflect their views (only).

For a very unusual view on news and current events try the NPR station KODX (Seattle). That is maybe the most left wing radio station in the US, but it's hard to place it on the UK spectrum. I've heard unusual things reported by them, but have usually been able to support what's been said by searching Google for confirmatory info.

I'm sure there's truth in that, but there's also the matter of what's become known as the "Overton window" - the range of views that's currently seen as acceptable within a certain society or organisation, with expressions of opinion outside it being fair game for ridicule if not actively suppressed or demonized. So it's hardly a guarantee of impartiality if what we hear is rarely far removed from a "central" range of opinions: especially if where that centre is, has been and continues to be strongly influenced by the organisation that's observing it. Venture outside the approved range of views on just about anything of substance, and the position that recommends itself to you may be ignored altogether, may be mocked or may be presented as a public menace: you'll absolutely never hear anyone putting the case for it.

Right now I'm listening to the "Vocal Trance" stream on https://www.di.fm/ and remembering 1990s happy party-times under the summer sun in Cornwall with much booze-and-stuff.

[Thought: if someone out there took the time to record the Radio1 Road Show on its wanderings, they could be really onto something for those of us who nagged our parents to take us to it. I remember being dropped-off at the Great Yarmouth R1 Road Show in the late-70s, never did make it on-stage, and my parents' car broke down 150 miles away so they couldn't come back to pick me up in the evening. So spent a night sleeping on the beach and finally being collected late the following day when they got a replacement car. These days that would be classed as child-neglect!]

Currently listening to Radio 3 – The only BBC service I still use regularly.

(Radio 2 & Radio 4 were for years, nay decades, my companions, and I listened a lot to several BBC Local Radio stations, but no longer. Radio 2 doesn’t target my generation – I’m far too old and I miss the broad output lost in favour of pop – and Radio 4’s programming is narrower than I enjoyed years ago has a particular agenda(s) that permeates much of its output. BBC LR is now Radio 2 lite.)

Later I shall be listening to Times Radio to catch up on today’s events and later it could be Boom Radio (wide selection of pop oldies and presenters that talk to me like an adult), Classic FM, or online Serenade Radio or Swiss Radio Jazz.

Other regular stations on my list are Radio Caroline (sometimes on AM depending on the time of day), TSF Jazz (France) and WBGO (Newark NJ NPR). I listen to specialist programmes from Carillon Wellbeing Radio 1476kHz and Hermitage FM – sister community stations from Coalville in Leicestershire. Carillon WR is audible at this QTH on AM though I usually listen online.

My main listens are Radio 2 (FM); Caroline and Smooth (both AM).

I still listen to and archive Radio 4/3/4xtra/WS/occasionally R2 or 6 radio/LBC mainly but their ad based shouty income stream often conflicts with the supposed "principals" of various presenters and the discussion is regulated to their advantage. It's expertly done but you can often hear the faders coming in and out along with a delay line. Admirers are so keen to be allowed to speak they don't notice this deception. It's baseline is fairly hypocritical-they've given more access to the listener which the Beeb [as usual] tries to keep up with, so you access things that don't turn up on our National Broadcaster that I still support.

When I've had enough of the LBC pace and noise I'm back to Radio 4. For an interesting and relaxed time it's Radio 3. The Beeb should aim to be the British Smithsonian but more as a national broadcasting and archiving asset and not a subsidised/failed Netflix competitor, one of all the brash commercial organisations. Like the NHS its management is rubbish. Alternative TV also has its merits eg G B TV which I often listen to in a radio mode [effectively]. See my post 112 on the "Power Shortage Warnings" thread [in Modern Tech]. Buying in electricity as an amazing example. Not mentioned elsewhere at all as far as I can see. I've had one or two responses to that [privately]!

Radio 1 FM Sian Eleri Chillest show. My music taste does not age with my age and is always youthful and i like chill music.I still do weight lifting and cardio with energetic dance music. I went to the party island Ibiza for 12 continuous years till 2017....i got bored of LBC and stopped listening to BBc 4 for a few months.

Agree 100%. As is the BBC News web site. There, got that off my chest. I realise though that this is not the place to expand on this.

Otherwise, I always crank out the same answer in this type of thread: I listen to the American elevator music station Jib-on-the-Web, which cranks out the same melodic background music 24/7. It's deliciously un-cool too, which I must admit appeals...

Being of a certain age (old) I like the music from the 50's. I'm currently listening to https://radio-addictive-50s.torontocast.stream/ No adverts, only a brief ask if you'd like to donate now and again. Many songs/music/bands from only the 50's from both the UK and US and a few others thrown in from other countries. Many I haven't heard for years but very listenable - you can hear the words, although in most cases the words come flooding back.

I forgot JIB-on-the-web! I sometimes listen to this as an alternative to the equally uncool and (IMHO) superb Serenade Radio (though how can a station where you might hear a Julie London, Sarah Vaughan or Chet Baker track be uncool?) but, unfortunately, my Pure internet radio cannot find JIB so I only listen on the computer. However, I have to collapse the webpage as it makes me seasick!

Serenade Radio even has Sing Something Simple on Sundays at 5pm for thirty minutes of Cliff Adams and the Adams singers accompanied by Jack Emblow. I thoroughly enjoy this - especially as everyone of my generation and younger (that's now a lot) are supposed to detest it. (The programme still retains the end credits by the late Patrick Lunt - a great radio voice.)

Another occasional listen is Giants of Jazz Radio which is another UK based online station.

In recent weeks I have been listening to various streams on YouTube; do a search on "Cafe jazz" and you get more than you can possibly listen to in a day.

Not sure actually how it is generated; I doubt there are actual bands producing it. Has AI got this good that it can magic-up this stuff on demand?

I made that comment earlier G6. I start with something I like and let it choose. Mostly its spot on for my tastes, but every now and then it flops badly. I do pay a basic subscription for utube, so that might have something to do with it. Al is getting very slick, at the same time as very nosy!!!. It "must " remember your tastes or it wouldnt be able to do that.
I wonder how big its member database is . Must be several 2102 chips involved .

My "listening" is mostly mp3 music files, mostly 1960s era with earpieces plugged into my phone. Nightime before going to sleep.
Since receiving my minimod mk2 pcbs, I am building/ experimenting with my am tx to feed into my Ekco A22 when it finally achieves pride of place in our lounge. I would love to achieve this for Christmas day to show off to my daughter and two teenage grandchildren.
Especially if I can get my grandson to operate the A22 and to tune in and maybe even find Churchill speaking! My mp3 player will provide the audio.
