Default Decca 101 recreation.

Remember the green Decca 121 cabinet I acquired last year?
Well today I applied some French polish to some of the surfaces just to assess what the cabinet might look like when the restoration is completed.

A Plessey Mark 1 chassis is to be installed in the cabinet and the chosen CRT will be a Mullard MW31-74. The Mk1 chassis was designed to accept a variety of CRTs, 2, 4 and 6.3 volt heaters, triode or tetrode guns.

The cabinet will require considerable modification in order that the new chassis can be installed.

That really is a nice bit of wood. What a shame it was to cover it all up with green paint!

Cheers

Wow, that looks absolutely beautiful already, David. Look at the grain! Fantastic! Who on earth could think it would be a good idea to slather it in emulsion? It must have been a labour of love getting all the paint off.

This is going to be a great project.

Hi Andy, Hi Steve,
The truth is there is still traces of green to get rid of. The two panels each side of the CRT aperture will be replaced so there is no need worry about those. The most difficult part of the job will be the making of those thirteen vertical slats in front of the loudspeaker.
The electronics is the easy bit.

Here's pictures of what it looked like and how it should look like when the recreation is complete.
Check out the green theme, green wheelie bin, green TV, green car.

Default Decca 101 recreation.

The cabinet is beginning to look like a Decca 101. New curved wood inserts have been made and fitted into the loudspeaker aperture.
Now I have to find the correct hardwood to make the eighteen vertical slats to complete the transformation of the cabinet from that green horror into a Decca 12" console TV receiver.

Default Decca 101 recreation project continued.

I recently bought twenty maple wood strips to make the vertical slats. Eighteen for the Decca 101 cabinet and two for construction of the wartime civilian radio receiver cabinet.
Spent many hours yesterday and today preparing the strips for the TV set.
The front edges have to be rounded off to resemble the original parts.
The second picture shows how the loudspeaker grill should look like when the job is done.

Yesterday the back board for the vertical slats was made. 5mm plywood used.
Before any attempt to make the eighteen vertical slats the exact dimensions must be determined so a test part has been made from a piece of low grade plywood.

The eighteen slats are now ready to be attached to the back board Each one is spaced 31.75mm apart. A template will be made for the screw holes.
I'm considering enlarging the loudspeaker aperture.

Today, the loudspeaker grill was test fitted into the loudspeaker aperture.
Now I know this part of the project is viable a better backboard can be made.

Time to strip off that hideous green paint from the doors.

Hi Steven,
thanks for the compliment.
Those green doors are proving difficult to strip. Two applications of paint stripper so far and there's still evidence of that awful green paint to remove. It's called chalk paint.
To make things worse there's a primer undercoat to get rid of.
It was the same with the cabinet.

Spent a few hours stripping off that green paint from the doors. There is still traces of the stuff but the doors are looking a bit better now.

This cabinet restoration is very interesting to watch. The veneer on those doors looks superb. Great progress, thanks for posting

But some of the original awfulness still exists and will in time be dealt with.
Check out those door knobs.

You've done all the difficult bits. The knobs will be easy. (But I know you know that.)

There's some internal work to be done to allow the installation of the Plessey Mark 1 chassis. The cabinet originally housed a projection receiver, model 121.

Default Decca 101 recreation project continued.

One of the last jobs to do the projection TV cabinet is replace the base panel.
Forum member Steven Niechcial kindly sent me pictures of the internal parts of the Decca 101 cabinet including how the the base panel is constructed.
The correct thickness plywood used to make the new base panel.
The first attachment shows Steven's Decca 101 and the following three pictures show the old projection TV base and the new panel after it was pinned and glued into position.
Rather than go the bother of making a new part the original rear batten was retained.
Quote Steven: "The set can be serviced upside down- I have done it many times."
