Default Wanted video player for 8mm video

We have a number of 8mm video tapes of our son's first few years and I would like to play them and transfer them to digital.
They were recorded on a Sanyo VM-D90R 8mm camcorder.
We still have the camcorder when when I try and play the tapes it will not sync with rapid frame roll and picture breakup.
I have tried a couple of tapes and the fault is the same, I have also tried winding forward and back to reseat the tape but the fault is the same.

I seem to recall that this was the reason we stopped using the camcorder some 22 years ago.

Does anyone have a player for 8mm video they could sell me at a resonable price please.

If you have access to a VCR, tape adapters are available, I do have one here but unsure as to whether to keep it or not.

Thanks but according to:
https://www.lifewire.com/8mm-vhs-adapter-1845834

" THERE IS NO 8mm/VHS ADAPTER! - 8mm/Hi8/miniDV tapes can't be played in a VHS VCR."

VHS-C can be played on a VHS video with a suitable adaptor.

No, there aren’t adapters to put 8mm into VHS machines, the actual tape in the cassette is a different width for a start. I have a couple of machines here, one doesn’t work unfortunately. There have been a good number on eBay, normally for not much money, the small Sony ones are good.

I did look on ebay but they all seem to be parts only or horribly expensive.

Many 8mm camcorders have failed due to dried out SMD caps, often all of the caps. To replace them is fiddly, time consuming work but it can be done.

Interesting, I will keep that in mind as a last resort.

Sony made conventional VCRs using 8mm tapes, but they didn't sell well and are even harder to find nowadays.

Depending on your electronics skills, you may be able to modify an Exabyte 8200 or 8500 data drive to play Video8 cassettes - it's the same technology (the 8200 was based on a Sony camcorder mech.)

Thanks Paul, I may have to consider something like that but at the moment the only requirement is to play and possibly transfer our old baby videos I will wait a bit and see if anything turns up.

You could try Colin at video99.co.uk.
Seems a decent chap.

Thanks Iontrap, I will give this thread a little while and if no luck I will send a sample tape to Colin to try his service.

If you get desperate, I have an industrial Video 8 machine, (NOT Hi-8).
I could transfer some for you, as long as there are not too many!

Most if not all of the Sony Digital 8 Camcorders will play Video 8 tapes and as they are a decade or so younger often better chance of working.

That's how I transferred all my Video 8 tapes.

Unfortunately My original Sony CCDV50E bought in early 1988 in HK suffered a catastrophic failure in the tape mech in the late 1990's

Cheers

I transferred my Video8 a few years ago, likewise my Sony camcorder no longer worked so I bought a sold as working camcorder (with s-video out) from eBay Once finished I sold it on. I think in the end it cost me about 10… plus the usb converter..

Thanks Mike T, I was not aware of that, just checked on e-bay, going rate seems to be around 60 but I would pay that to get these transfered. I have about 8 tapes but most are less than half full.

As Patrickgnl says I can sell it on after.

Probably the way to go.

I have just checked all the sub 100 sony digital 8 Camcorders listed on ebay against the spec on the Sony website and all say

Hi8/Video8 Playback - NO

Peter

Edit
However this web site which lists camcorders that can play 8mm tapes

https://transfervideotapes.com/digit...-hi8-playback/

says different.
Very puzzling, more research is needed methinks

Peter

As I said above check out your local charity shops.

Our local British Red Cross currently has a Sharp VL-A10 which a Google search leads me to believe will take 8mm tapes for 45 quid. (Tested and working, includes a used tape, instructions, lead, battery and charger (but no 2 pin mains lead).

Gumtree and Freecycle etc are other useful resources.

Thanks, I will check my local charity shops. I have already checked Gumtree and get regular updates from freecycle.
