My concern (and I sent a PM to this effect) is that an IBM 5170 would not give that message. In fact, if it can't boot from any drive (hard or floppy) it will go into ROM BASIC. This suggests to me that the machine is no longer a 5170, it's been upgraded at some point, meaning technical information on the 5170 (like the Technical Reference manual on my bookshelf) will not be any help.

Jason hasn't been back since his original post, but will have received an email in response to your PM, and one I've just sent.
