Re: Kolster Brandes RV 10 (Crown)
Well this really has become a head scratcher! I can't see it being anything else apart from the scan coils, let's see if Johns coils sort this one out once fitted! (fingers crossed)
(I wish you well John not suffering with anything too serious I hope?) Kind regards

Posted at Broadbridge Heath this afternoon. We are all holding our breath!
[I'm fine Dom. Just a nuisance not being able to drive at the moment. First time since 1964. The bike can be hard work here in hilly Horsham but I must admit I feel a bit vulnerable but drivers seem very considerate. I'm surprised] Good luck with the RV10. John. |

Re: Kolster Brandes RV 10 (Crown)
After a frankly day at work, I wandered back to my shed to try and console myself that maybe, just maybe it was deflection coils and I will see some light on the screen. I placed the coils that John kindly provided and...I have a raster... of sorts! .
I don't have the magnets or linearity sleeve back on the tube neck yet. Next is to refit these and try and pull the raster out to the whole screen.

Re: Kolster Brandes RV 10 (Crown)
That looks a bit odd. Make sure you have the connections correct to the line and frame coils.
I would expect maybe slight lack of width/height etc but not such a distorted raster. The lin sleeve will only correct slight errors in width/linearity so no need to fit for a test. At least it's showing something! Check the coil connections themselves in case of post damage.John. |

Re: Kolster Brandes RV 10 (Crown)
I had one of the line coil connections seemingly on the wrong tag, the one in the centre. The frame coils only have two connections. Now I get a 3 inch collapsed frame which varies in height slightly with adjustment of the controls. Boost voltage is up to 640 volts and the brightness has to be turned right down. The tube seems to be good! Present personal circumstances has limited my 'shed' time to tinker away. I will check for causes of the compressed height next.

Re: Kolster Brandes RV 10 (Crown)
Attention turned to the frame circuit. The vertical linearity pot was scratchy and intermittent but responded to some servisol, measuring in spec. I switched the 2 PCL82s around to see if there was a difference - no difference was noticed. After about 5 minutes the raster expands up to fill most of the screen. I will carry on checking components in the frame circuit. Just out of curiosity I rigged up my Aurora and the set is fairly 'deaf', but that is for later fault finding. I know this set is going to drag its heels but it will be dragged back to a fully working set! This has been a great learning experience so far.

Re: Kolster Brandes RV 10 (Crown)
Yes it has but you have kept at it! The slow opening frame is usually due to a lazy heating PCL82. Swapping the valves may not prove the point as the sound output valve is often in a very much worse state [but still working] than the frame. I have spare PCL82s if you need one.
There should be more than enough sound but that should be an easy one. Regards, John. |

Re: Kolster Brandes RV 10 (Crown)
John, thank you very much for the PCL82s. The 2 in the set were replaced. Not much improvement to the frame height but the sound from the speaker is much louder. I am now checking all of the components around the frame circuit, the height control is fine. So far, an 1.8M Ohm resistor coupling the height control to the anode of the triode side of the V12 PCL82 had gone high to 4MOhm. A replacement increased the height from 2-3 inches to 5-6 inches. I will carry on checking.

Re: Kolster Brandes RV 10 (Crown)
The quest continues! Slowly working through checking components as the frame is only about 2 to 3 inches high. Is there another published circuit diagram as the R&TVS diagram has hand written values which are difficult to read? Thanks in advance.

There are 2 CZ9 thermistors in the field output transformer primary. The original manual
is a clear diagram, and there is a very large range of manuals on the mono TV dvd at top of page including the RV10, both KB manual and ERT sheets available. |

Re: Kolster Brandes RV 10 (Crown)
A much less wiser version of me decided to bulk recap years ago...arrgh. I worked through the frame fault section of the service manual and found C94 missing!
R102 had gone really high which on replacement restored a 50% high raster but clipping a 0.1 cap in the space where a cap was showing from my original pictures taken at the start of this thread resulting in a full raster! It's upside down but turning the yoke 180 degrees should fix that. For the first time on this set, the Aurora was fired up and I have sound but no vision so far. Checks will carry on to see what other mistakes I made. I learned a while ago to never bulk replace components and here's the proof...

Keep the scan coils the correct way up and just swop over their connections. A lesson learned with the blanket change. It crops up many times. J.

Re: Kolster Brandes RV 10 (Crown)
A clean of the tuner was done by removing the unit and popping off the steel cover. The disc with the channel coils was removed and the contacts polished with some A4 paper dampened with some Servisol. The two valves were removed, sockets cleaned and replaced. The beginnings of a test card tantalizingly are discernable. Things are still amiss with sound on channel 1 and this smeary image on channel 2. I know this set is going to fight me all the way!

Re: Kolster Brandes RV 10 (Crown)
I would suggest you replace the sync coupling capacitor C55 .1uf between the anode of the video amp to the grid of the sync separator. It will probably be leaky. You will probably have to back check all your work due to the mass change of capacitors. It's very easy to make a mistake that can be very frustrating when fault finding. J.
