Fair price for an Eddystone EB35 ?

Hi guys

there's an Eddystone EB35 for sale locally, looks to be in VGC complete with handbooks etc.
Seller says it works fine and is asking £140.

Is this a fair price ?

I was looking for something a little more vintage (valved) but feeling a little tempted by this EB35

Personally, I'd say it was worth no more than £60. The EB35 and its full-shortwave-coverage-and-a-BFO sibling the EC10 were honestly not really very good receivers.

thanks - that's largely in line with my thinking ie circa £70 tops.

I'll pass on it for now - maybe they'll drop the price to £50 ish as it looks like a house clearance going by other items they have for sale.

Which version? I have the IC (integrated circuit) one. One little chip surrounded by lots of metal, it works well for FM, MW, LW, and casual SW listening. I would say the £60 mark is about right.

It is worth what folks are willing to pay I guess. Though I have seen cheaper.

Of course if it is mint and boxed.

EB35, EC10...They were just a fairly ordinary transistor radio sort of circuit dressed up in a rather cute box and with more bands worth of coils on the bandswitch.

As Tanuki said, they really don't work well on the shortwave bands and are average on long/medium.

Prices are jacked up far above their worth as a radio receiver because of the cuteness.

Unless you want it for a display shelf, I'd try to talk you out of it irrespective of price.

Thanks David - I'm going to pass on it. I suspect part my issue is lock down boredom and not having much on project wise at the moment.

If you want a transistor radio with shortwave bands, have a look at the Hacker Helmsman. Again, not a comms receiver, but useful for tracing sources of interference or just having a wander round the shortwave broadcasters. Likely to be a good bit cheaper.

For a small receiver with better performance than you'd expect, try the Lowe receivers, but i find the user interface a bit tedious.

For ex-military with some cuteness, the Racal RA1217 gets you proper SSB crystal filters and a Wadley synthesis arrangement.

I think a fair amount of the demand for EB35/EC10 is from Eddystone collectors infected with the 'pokemon syndrome' (gotta gettem all)

And equally if you want a low-end 'proper' communications-receiver that will stay on-frequency for resolving SSB, the Yaesu FRG7 is really worth considering.

I'll give the frog a +1 as well - and it runs on batteries too!

the Frog-7 was an excellent receiver for the price. It's a Japanese consumer version of the RA1217 and uses the Wadley scheme.

The downside is that many FRG7s seen nowadays have been mucked about with in attempts to 'improve' them. An old friend of mine even turned a couple into HF transceivers!

Hi,

Having had several FRG-7s, I would entirely agree that in their price bracket
they were really excellent value for money. I also had 2 RA1217s, and apart
from the Wadley loop, I would say that was where any comparison ended!

The FRG7 did have one big advantage though ( apart from battery operation)
- it was a lot easier to find room for on the bench!
