Default Roberts R250

I have recently acquired one of these which has the aerial at the left hand side and using four D cells. This also has a slightly larger loudspeaker.
I also have one of the earlier ones with the knobs with brass brights.
My opinion is that the later one has a much richer sound.
Can anyone date these, this one has a serial no 10419354.
Does anyone have any experience of these and I would be interested what you would rate them.
