Depends how long E(VIII)R went on for before he turned himself into Mr Windsor.

They (Windsor and Simpson) were good friends of Richard Burton and Liz Taylor - only found that out by reading Burton's diaries.

Seven minutes and one second including Lord Reith's introduction.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/edward_viii/

There's been some debate as to whether the "thump" heard just after the intro is Lord Reith closing the door or the prince accidently hitting the table.

That would need two sides of a 10" 78 then.

Looks like a standard shellac pressing - should be playable with a decent 78 rig.

I dunno.

Checking other acetates, eg http://www.popsike.com/ELVIS-PRESLEY...453950795.html

... they look pretty close to 78s visually from the images. I'd say it would be hard to tell

Take care with what sort of player you use. A traditional wind-up gramophone may damage the disc, which is likely to be fragile. A 'Dansette'-type player in unknown condition is also a bit risky if the stylus is damaged or misaligned.

It would be best to find someone who has a good quality (traditionally known as 'transcription') player which will be able to play the disc gently using a relatively light tracking weight. This will minimise the risk of damage to the disc as well as getting the best possible sound from it.

Hi,
If it were mine, rather than play it on a vintage 78 rpm record player, I'd be inclined to play it on a modern 'Hi-Fi' deck with a light weight pick-up at 45 rpm and record it onto a computer running 'Audacity', a sound file handling program. Then you can speed it up using the software and, with a bit of patience, remove the worst of the clicks & pops that always accompany old recordings.
Just a thought.
Cheers, Pete.

Maybe, but the clincher is the pressing ring in the label and the edge profile. It's a pressing, either filled vinyl or more likely shellac. And my definition of a decent 78 rig involves a lightweight pickup - I play them for a living, afer all.

Problem is that a modern stylus will bottom out on a 78 groove, or certainly ride very low. You really need a specific stylus for the groove format of 78's.

I get around that problem by having an old Shure M75EDII with an N75-3 stylus for my limited 78 collection.

And that is before you get into the different EQ that is used on 78's from different manufacturers and ages. But I think Audacity can cope with that.

Aha - yes it does http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/78rpm_playback_curves

This is getting very technical lol
I can see this record sitting in my cupboard another few years , I'm so confused and wouldn't know who to trust with it to play it
Like some ppl have said it's probably not worth a great deal anyway lol

It's probably more of sentimental value. Pass it on down the generations!

All very interesting! Never thought to check the pressing ring!

I wonder if there is any matrix writing.

I have a couple of Lenco L75s and an L78 fitted with Shure M44-7 cartridges (2.8 mil and 3.5 mil styli). But I usually play my 78s on my Collaros!

I wouldn't worry about the equalisation settings ... that won't harm the record. If you can get some one in the know to play it on suitable equipment with the right stylus and tracking force, then at least you can get it recorded onto other media and find out what is on it. Then you'll get better advice on its value, at least for insurance purposes if not for selling it on or donating to a museum/archive.

Suzy,

Can I suggest that you contact a member of the HRSA (Historical Radio Society of Australia) at their website www.hrsa.asn.au

They will be able to put you in touch with someone in your area that will have the required equipment and knowledge to play your 78rpm recording for you and may even be able to transfer the contents to a modern format so you can then play it yourself on computer etc.

I am sure they will be very helpful and sympathetic to your needs.

I hope it all goes well.

Best regards,

Mike Barker.

I knew I had a copy of this record somewhere, and I've now managed to find it. Mine suggests that it was recorded in the USA. I've attached photos of both sides. The pencilled title is my addition. I bought the record a few years ago in a Cambridge bric-a-brac shop for a few pounds. It's not uncommon to find the odd interesting American item in this area - it quite possibly arrived here with a USAF family at some point after WW2.

One or two interesting points about the record:

It's marked 'Speed 80' rather than 78 and indeed sounds right at that speed.

The label, with its 'broadcast period' and 'program no' suggests that it was recorded specifically for broadcasting. The 'Liberty Music Shops' label sections have been stuck on top of the original 'Sound Reproductions Corp' label, presumably when they found that customers wanted to buy copies of the speech.

It's a pressing rather than a lacquer. The two sides are scratch-labelled on the master by hand 1045 and 1046 respectively.

It has no run-in or run-out grooves.

The sound quality is good, though of more limited bandwidth (4kHz?) than the BBC online archive. Incidentally, the latter is an interesting reminder of the high quality produced by a BBC OB 80 years ago.

It begins, prior to Lord Reith's introduction, with Big Ben striking 6.

As well as the limited bandwidth, there are hints of some 'phasey' distortion, suggesting that it may have been recorded from the BBC Empire short-wave service which carried the live broadcast. Presumably the recording was then rebroadcast at appropriate times for the different timezones in the USA. The original disc for rebroadcast would presumably have been a direct lacquer, there being no time for processing and pressing.

Suzyperth - You may be able to tell if your record is an original BBC lacquer disc by looking for the edge of the 'core' aluminium disc which lies under the lacquer and is sometimes visible. I guess that the BBC would have cut several discs of such a momentous broadcast, both for security and for subsequent broadcast on the Empire service. AS discussed, I guess that the first step is to play it and verify what's on it!

80rpm was the normal speed for Columbia Graphophone records, I recollect.
