I notice that all references to the King have been crossed out, so it's possible the sleeve was reused. I think you're going to have to play the record to check what's on it.

H G Franklin, Caversham Road, Reading was probably a record shop rather than The BBC's Caversham outpost.

Is that some additional info I can see on the outer cardboard sleeve?

This was definitely not brought in a record shop my grandfather knew the guy who made it , not sure why the lines on the are a bit over the writing though
I think the cardboard sleeve may not of been from this record I've a feeling my grandfather just use this for extra protection

I've copied your pictures to post #23 so that members don't have to flit between this thread and your album in order to see them.

That may well be true, but if I were in the market for buying this record, which I'm not, I'd need more information than that and I'd want to know what's actually recorded on the disc.

BBC Antiques Roadshow...Get the BBC to pay your air fare and get them to play the record on the show, it would make a great Hooray/Disappointment story, the BBC likes that kind of thing.

If this is a recording of the Edward VIII abdication speech, it may not be rare as a recording because the speech wasn't subject to editing. It was a difficult business to edit speech recordings in the 1930s and only done for a very good reason. The speeches of George VI were edited, despite the difficulties, to conceal his pronounced stammer (this is what is portrayed in the King's Speech movie).

The disc itself is still an interesting historical artifact, especially given the provenance, but it may not be very valuable in cash terms.

Thanks everyone for your comments I'm not sure how to comment on each post separately
But looks like I need to play it somehow to confirm what it is , I'm a bit concerned about damaging it though , I just need to find an old 78 player
I was led to believe the copies that were sold in the shops were edited but like paulsherwin said maybe they wasn't
I've no idea on this kinda thing , I'm just going by what I was told by my grandfather

Unless it's one of the BBC's special 41cm. discs (which will not fit on most turntables), it should be playable using a standard magnetic or ceramic cartridge with a diamond or sapphire stylus, and a tracking weight of 2 - 6g.

Just found this for what it is worth.
http://www.obsoletemedia.org/acetate/
This is a fascinating thread.
Isn't there a way of contacting a long-standing Australian broadcaster which may have acetates in its archives and know how to proceed with this artefact?

Thanks collaro for the link, if anyone else has any ideas please let me know I'd love to find out more. I've had it for about 15 years locked away in the cupboard

We have several members in Perth WA, so a post in the Repair and Restoration Services Wanted section might allow you to find someone who can play the record for you and provide a copy on an alternative media.

It would be interesting to know how this record came into you grandfather's possession. Who was the man who made the recording for example?

Hi stationx , I'll try that thanks
I don't know anything about the guy only that he worked at the BBC in the recording studio and he gave it to my grandfather in payment for a job he did for him ,and said look after this it will be worth a lot of money
I never knew about it until my grandfather gave it to me weeks before he died and he told me the story

... or 10" in old money. This (and 12") were fairly common sizes for 78 RPM records.

The fact that it is spread over four sides confirms to me that it probably is a standard recording rather than the acetate direct recording. It is still probably quite rare, with few (if any) others outside the BBC itself - though I may be proved wrong (I often am!)

Sorry, I thought there were two discs labelled "part 1" and "part 2", but if they are simply sides 1 and 2 of the same disc, I'll revise that to two sides - still one more than I would expect on a direct recording.
