I'm reminded of a friend who bought a house a few years back. It came with an 'unidentified' switch-and-40A-RCD in the utility-room, which connected to a nice fat 6mm 3-core SWA cable that ran out through the wall and disappeared into the orchard.

Not knowing what this was for, my friend followed the "switch it off and see what stops happening" approach.

He switched it off, and nothing seemed to stop happening - until a fortnight later when the cellar was found to be a foot-deep in sewage.

The switch was for the pump that lifted the output of the septic-tank to its drainage-bed. Switched off, the tank backed-up and fed back through the drain intended for the laundry facilities in the now-flooded cellar.
