Very nice! The only thing I would maybe add is a transparent red window in front of the displays - if you can find one. I thought it would be trivial to find one, but they seem quite hard to come by now.

Yes - definitely needs a window for the 7 seg displays.

You could try "lighting filter gel" which is cheap but flexible so might need sandwiching between a couple of thin sheets of clear plastic or similar.

An example of a reasonably priced, UK sourced filter meant for the purpose - from memory though it may not be wide enough for the display on the Maplin system - probably meant to cover the four or six digits of a typical digital clock project.

If you're a good craftsman you could butt two of them up against each other to cover the whole display with the join on the boundary between two display cells, or perhaps contact the supplier to see if they can source a longer window?

(I have not used this supplier myself).

RS do a large 130mm x 220mm filter but its £33!

I did see those, but they were outside the boundaries of what I considered 'reasonable'. I would be astonished if they ever sell any at that price.
