Further to Julie's suggestion at post 16 of this thread I have just replaced a noisy BC384L with a BC549 in my Armstrong. It works perfectly. Oddly the pinout of the BC549 actually fits the circuit board better. The leads on the BC384L had to be crossed to make it fit the correct holes but the BC549 is a straight drop in replacement, even matching the screen printing on the board which the original did not.
