Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
C13 Reservoir.
C12 Smoother. They'll be in the big can labelled "HUNTS" along with C11. Personally I think that before replacing them you should check the resistance across the HT line. There may be a very obvious short. That Red/Yellow/Black Plessey electrolytic capacitor needs to go too.

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
would it be ok to replace the Plessey 25v 25uf 70c with a 22uF 25V Radial 105 deg Capacitor

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
Or maybe 330k- depends on whether the orangey red rings are really red or orange.

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
There are three 220k shown on Lawrence's schematic namely R6, R11 & R12.
Check the connections to make sure it is one of the above. What value does it measure, most likely it will measure > 220k David |

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
From the latest photo in Post#67, R5 does look now to be 100k.

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
You have very good eyesight Lawrence both to identify it as 100K and more difficult to identify it as R5.
I guess from the ? against R5 on your schematic that the value of R5 came into question in the older Thread. David |

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
As per the above posts, the most important thing to do at this point is to measure the resistance from the red lead (of the big grey resistor) to the chassis, to start tracing what is pulling too much current from the rectifier and cooking the resistor. It's likely to be the reservoir capacitor but we don't know that yet.
However the reason for my post is that without intending to distract from the above, I can't help noticing that the replacement 50μF capacitor that has been installed in place of a red & black Plessey, appears in the pic in post 48 to have a date code of November 1959. Electrolytics go bad with age, especially if not used at all, so the replacement could easily be as life-expired as the original. I leave main electrolytics in place if they are of reliable brands and in excellent functional condition, but where they have to be replaced it makes sense to use new, high-quality parts otherwise there is a risk of introducing new faults. On a different and very minor side note about repair technique, had the metal rectifiers been left in-situ with the red lead disconnected, the diode could have been mounted between the resistor tag and the green lead still attached to the metal rec, and a neater repair would have resulted without one end of the diode floating in midair. |

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
.210 what? You must state units.
